Family Dollar Stores on Wednesday named Jason Reiser to the position of SVP merchandising where he will have executive responsibility for the company’s health, beauty, personal care and household teams. Reiser comes to Family Dollar from Sam’s Club, where he spent more than 17 years in a variety of roles, most recently serving as VP merchandising, health and family care.

Jason Reiser is one of the brightest young merchandising executives in this industry and has proven a knack for making health and wellness relevant and exciting to shoppers in alternative channels — Reiser was instrumental in developing and implementing Sam's Club's three-pillar strategy around Awareness, Prevention and Solutions. Expect Reiser to bring some innovation in the way health and wellness is sold in a dollar store environment.

Family Dollar Stores on Wednesday reported a net sales increase of 9% to $2.6 billion for third quarter ended June 1, reaching the upper end of the discount chain's guidance. Comparable store sales in the quarter increased 2.9%.

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Family Dollar Stores on Wednesday reported a net sales increase of 9% to $2.6 billion for third quarter ended June 1, reaching the upper end of the discount chain's guidance. Comparable store sales in the quarter increased 2.9%.

Family Dollar attributed the increase in comparable store sales to an increase in the average customer transaction value and higher customer traffic. Sales were strongest in the consumables category, which increased 14.8% during the quarter, driven primarily by strong growth in food, health and beauty aids and tobacco.

Family Dollar Stores reported a net sales increase of 17.7% to $2.9 billion for the second quarter ended March 2.

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Family Dollar Stores on Thursday reported a net sales increase of 17.7% to $2.9 billion for the second quarter ended March 2. Comparable stores were up 2.9%.

An extra week in the quarter contributed approximately $189 million in sales. Strong growth in tobacco, food and HBA contributed to a 26.6% lift across consumables, the dollar operator reported.

The Human Rights Campaign released its 2013 Corporate Equality Index, which gives companies ratings of up to 100% based on their policies regarding LGBT employees and also released a buyer's guide for LGBT consumers.

The dollar store chain reported a total sales increase of 9.6% to $2.36 billion for the third quarter, compared with $2.15 billion for the same period last year. Same-store sales rose 5%, helped by increased customer traffic and strong performances in the seasonal, electronics and consumables categories.

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Family Dollar is getting the Redbox treatment.

The discount store chain announced it inked a multiyear deal with the Coinstar subsidiary, through which Redbox kiosks will be installed at Family Dollar locations across the United States. Family Dollar customers will be able to rent new release DVDs at Redbox for $1.20 a night, Blu-ray discs for $2 a night and games for $2 a night.
