Pharmacy benefit manager Express Scripts reported its third-quarter results for the period ended Sept. 30.

ST. LOUIS — Pharmacy benefit manager Express Scripts reported its third-quarter results for the period ended Sept. 30.

ESI said that its revenue grew from about $11.3 billion in the third quarter 2010 to nearly $11.6 billion. The company also reported that adjusted earnings per diluted share was 79 cents, representing a 22% increase over last year. Additionally, net income from continuing operations were $324.7 million, compared with $301.5 million in the year-ago period.

What's more, other parties are beginning to weigh in on the dispute, notably in favor of Walgreens.

According to a statement issued by Walgreens Wednesday morning, the arbitrator in the Express Scripts/Walgreens suit issued a ruling Sunday denying the parties’ requests for preliminary injunctive relief.

WASHINGTON — The Preserve Community Pharmacy Access NOW! coalition on Wednesday announced its opposition to the proposed merger between Express Scripts and Medco Health Solutions.

"The merger between two of these middlemen, which could go into effect as soon as early 2012, would create a mega-pharmacy benefit management company with excessive control over the health care of tens-of-millions of Americans. This would limit our access to and choice of pharmacies," the coalition stated.

In an effort to continue serving the U.S. Department of Defense's Tricare pharmacy program in 2012, Walgreens has offered a new proposal to Express Scripts.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — In an effort to continue serving the U.S. Department of Defense's Tricare pharmacy program in 2012, Walgreens has offered a new proposal to Express Scripts.

In what it calls "an ironclad guarantee," Walgreens said that the drug store chain's prices would match or beat the average costs per adjusted prescription of all other pharmacies in the Tricare network. Walgreens added that it will produce savings for the program "without disrupting beneficiaries’ choice of a network pharmacy provider."

S&P noted that the loss of the Express Scripts contract will result in a meaningful revenue and profit decline in fiscal 2012 in initiating its outlook adjustment.

However, S&P did affirm its ratings on the company, including an 'A' corporate credit rating, MarketWatch reported.

The feathers continued to fly last week. First, NACDS debuted a new print ad in the Washington Post, then news broke that half the states in the country are against the $29 billion ESI-Medco mega-merger.

If Express Scripts and Medco are right about the projected closing of what their opponents are calling the “mega-merger,” then we might be looking at dozens of more weeks of this.
