Walgreens posted a sales gain of 0.8% for the fiscal year ended Aug. 31, reaching a record $72.2 billion and filling a record 821 million prescriptions.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens posted a sales gain of 0.8% for the fiscal year ended Aug. 31, reaching a record $72.2 billion and filling a record 821 million prescriptions. That volume of prescriptions filled helped Walgreens boost its retail pharmacy market share for the fiscal year to 19.1%. 

Early morning trading boosted Walgreens' share price from a close of $53.80 on Monday to $56.06, an increase of 4.2%.

BOULDER, Colo. — As the city of Boulder, Colo., continues to clean up from last weekend's record-setting rainfall and subsequent flooding, pharmacists and employees of Pharmaca Integrative Pharmacy based here made it into work to maintain continuity of prescription medicines for area residents. 

A total of 14.62 inches of rain fell from the afternoon of Sept. 9 through Sept. 13 in Colorado. Boulder was one of the hardest areas hit by the storm.

WASHINGTON — The National Community Pharmacists Association recently put out a call for pharmacists to participate in an Oct. 3 "Tweet-a-Thon: Pharmacists Helping Patients."

"Please join pharmacists around the world for a day of celebrating their contributions to health care and our communities," the association stated. "Every day, pharmacists quietly and efficiently help patients in many ways and in many diverse practice settings. For one day, the world will hear about it on Twitter."

And C&D may be as few as three years away from fielding an OTC product in a gummy format.

Duane Reade in late August surpassed 1 million Twitter followers, and will be celebrating the accomplishment at its 40 Wall St. location on Tuesday during an invitation-only event.

NEW YORK — Duane Reade in late August surpassed 1 million Twitter followers, and will be celebrating the accomplishment at its 40 Wall St. location on Tuesday during an invitation-only event.  

That makes Duane Reade by far the most-followed retailer on Twitter in the food, drug and mass arena. Duane Reade has garnered five times more Twitter followers than its parent company Walgreens (180,390 followers), the second-most followed drug store retailer. CVS/pharmacy, No. 3, is followed by 117,931 Twitterers.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Pharmacy and hardware/auto were two significant contributing factors behind Fred's Super Dollar second-quarter sales increase of 2%, the company reported. "[We] were pleased with the progress of the first phase of our reconfiguration plan as the penetration of stores with pharmacies increased from 50% to 52%, and we experienced strong comparable sales performance in our expanded Hometown Auto & Hardware departments," Fred's CEO Bruce Efird stated.

Supervalu on Thursday reported first quarter fiscal 2014 net sales of $5.2 billion, down 1.5%, and net earnings of $85 million, or $0.34 per diluted share.

MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu on Thursday reported first quarter fiscal 2014 net sales of $5.2 billion, down 1.5%, and net earnings of $85 million, or $0.34 per diluted share. The decrease in net sales primarily reflects a decline in identical store sales of negative 3% percent for retail food and negative 1.9% for Save-A-Lot. Identical store sales for corporately operated stores within the Save-A-Lot network were negative 1.2%.

Retailers who had to beef up their cold and flu remedy supplies in the latter half of the season may not need to order as heavily over the summer as they may have in the past. A late start to the allergy season also is reducing the need for cough-cold stock.
