With a little more than three months to go before the start of the first NACDS Total Store Expo show, which replaces its Marketplace, Pharmacy and Technology, and Supply Chain conferences, DSNTV caught up with the NACDS president and CEO Steve Anderson to talk about the biggest challenges facing the industry as the association celebrates its 80th anniversary.

And the National Association of Chain Drug Stores is committed to helping its members navigate a regulatory process for what is still a “very complicated and still uncertain piece of legislation,” NACDS president and CEO Steve Anderson told DSNTV in an exclusive interview in April at Annual Meeting in Palm Beach.

The Food and Drug Administration on Friday announced a meeting of the Nonprescription Drugs Advisory Committee on May 2 to discuss the potential switch of Merck's Singulair Allergy tablets.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration on Friday announced a meeting of the Nonprescription Drugs Advisory Committee on May 2 to discuss the potential switch of Merck's Singulair Allergy tablets. 

The proposed OTC use is "temporarily relieves these symptoms due to hay fever or other upper respiratory allergies: Nasal congestion, runny nose, itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, itching of the nose.” The applicant proposes to label the product for OTC use in adults 18 years and older.

WAUKEGAN, Ill. — Briggs Healthcare, a supplier to the hospital, pharmaceutical/DME and retail markets for 65 years, on Monday announced it is aligning its brands under the HealthSmart name as of summer 2014. The brand will be supported by a new website for wholesale and retail customers and, in collaboration with its retail partners, new packaging. Following the announcement, more than 1,000 products will be rebranded as HealthSmart.

Acute bronchitis consistently ranks among the top 10 conditions diagnosed in the retail health setting. Most cases of bronchitis have a viral etiology — respiratory syncytial virus, adenovirus, influenza and parainfluenza being most common.

Early-stage Alzheimer’s disease, or AD, increasingly is the target of drug development efforts, but there are very few tools that measure the cognitive function of patients with the condition before the onset of dementia. Experts have concluded that it is best to treat patients prior to changes in cognition, before the symptoms of neurodegeneration appear. As a result, scientists have turned to biomarkers to provide some indication of whether AD is likely to develop.

Recent measles outbreaks in New York City and California have many healthcare professionals concerned for their patients. According to the Center for Disease Control, measles was declared eliminated from the United States in 2000, with only an average of 60 cases of measles reported each year. But in 2013, that number increased to 189 cases.

Walgreens is expanding the distribution of its Boots' No7 beauty brand across its New York City store base, Greg Wasson, president and CEO Walgreens, told analysts Tuesday morning.

Overall, the OTC sector in 2013 realized $40.2 billion in sales, according to data culled from OTC categories tracked by IRI.

The 2013 sales numbers reflect a strong 2012-2013 cough-cold season and the relaunch of Tylenol, Excedrin and Motrin.
