SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration on Friday addressed the current outbreak of E. coli O104 in Europe.

The U.S. regulatory agency said that it has been in "routine contact" with the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention and the European Union to monitor the current outbreak of E. coli O104 and to track any illnesses in the United States that may be related to the outbreak.

PARSIPPANY, N.J. — Watson Pharmaceuticals has acquired Greek drug maker Specifar Pharmaceuticals for $562 million, the two companies said Wednesday.

Watson said that through the acquisition, it had gained a leading generic product development company that develops and out-licenses products throughout the world, while also enhancing its commercial presence in Europe.

GSK said it planned to contact companies interested in acquiring the brands over the next few weeks and expected to complete all divestitures by late 2011.

PHILADELPHIA — An increase in consolidation among generic drug companies could be in the works, according to a new report from Thomson Reuters.

According to the report, “Gaining Market Share in the Generic Drug Industry Through Acquisitions and Partnerships,” generic drug makers face competition, as well as government-mandated price cuts in Europe and such policies as lowest-price tendering. As a result, many could seek deals that would cause them to diversify their portfolios.

LONDON — GlaxoSmithKline has received a license extension in Europe for its popular weight-loss pill Alli.

The drug maker said it plans to sell new chewable tablets this spring, available at pharmacies throughout the United Kingdom.

Alli has been available in the United Kingdom since early 2009.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Global Industry Analysts on Wednesday released its report on the future growth of the diabetes diagnostics market.

In "Diabetes Diagnostics: A Global Strategic Business Report," GIA projected that the global market for diabetes diagnostics is expected to reach $26 billion by 2015. GIA noted that the United States is the largest regional market, followed by Europe. The report also noted that the increasing number of diabetics worldwide will prompt boosts in certain segments, including blood-glucose test strips and meters.
