CINCINNATI — Kroger announced today the company's committment to sourcing sustainable palm oil by the end of 2015 amid the growing popularity of vegetable oil and deforestation fears.

Kroger issued the following policy statement:

Palm oil has become the world's leading oil crop and today accounts for roughly one-third of the global vegetable oil production. This oil has grown in popularity within the food industry as a cooking oil, shortening, margarine, milk-fat replacer, and as a cocoa-butter substitute.

QUINCY, Mass. — Stop & Shop is reaffirming its goal to reduce its effects on the environment, particularly in Massachusetts, the company said.

The Ahold USA banner, which operates 131 stores in the state, said it renewed its partnership with the Environmental League of Massachusetts as a member of the ELM Corporate Council and reiterated its commitment to help further the goals of a state law to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2020 and 85% by 2050. In 2008, the chain announced plans to reduce its carbon footprint by 20% by 2015.

SAN LUIS POTOSÍ — French beauty company L’Oréal has announced the opening of what it said is the largest hair color production plant in the world in terms of production capacity.

With an investment totaling $100 million, this new factory will double the production capacity in Mexico, and will supply both Latin America and North America.

“Supporting academics to deepen the research and more widely share the evidence behind our products is critical to ensuring that natural products are embraced by the market, endorsed by regulators and accessible to consumers," stated David Matteson, chairman of the NPF Scholarship Committee.

The three students are Lauren Au of Tufts University, Taylor Kaufmann of Bastyr University and Vanessa Mardones of Memorial University.

MADISON, N.J. — Ragweed and mold are driving increased allergies across America, Quest Diagnostics reported Monday.

In the study, sensitization rates to common ragweed and mold increased the most of the 11 common allergens evaluated over a four-year period. Sensitization to common ragweed grew 15% nationally, while mold grew 12%. By comparison, sensitization to the 11 allergens combined increased 5.8%.

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — Kellogg's announced that seven of its U.S. cookie and cracker bakeries have earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star certification.

The seven Kellogg's facilities represent more than half of the 13 EPA-recognized U.S. cookie and cracker bakeries from multiple companies.

The certification builds on Kellogg's commitment to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions by 15% to 20% by 2015.

ATLANTA — The number of people diagnosed with asthma in the United States grew by 4.3 million between 2001 and 2009, according to a new Vital Signs report released earlier this week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In 2009, nearly 1-in-12 Americans were diagnosed with asthma. In addition to increased diagnoses, asthma costs grew from about $53 billion in 2002 to about $56 billion in 2007, representing a 6% increase. The explanation for the growth in asthma rates is unknown.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Supermarket retailer Fresh & Easy has added four more GreenChill-certified stores this year, a distinction developed by the Environmental Protection Agency's GreenChill Partnership.

The company, which has stores in California, Arizona and Nevada, now has the most GreenChill-certified stores than any other retailer in the nation. Fresh & Easy opened its first GreenChill store in September 2010.

BOSTON Diabetes could partially be related to air pollution, according to a new study.

 

The study, conducted by researchers at Children’s Hospital Boston and published in this month’s issue of the journal Diabetes Care, found that diabetes in adults was consistently correlated with particulate air pollution even after adjusting for known risk factors, such as obesity and ethnicity.
