BOSTON — A new NPR/Robert Wood Johnson Foundation/Harvard School of Public Health poll released Tuesday found that Latinos in America see diabetes as the biggest health problem for their own families.

Nearly 1-in-5 (19%) Latinos said diabetes is the biggest health problem facing their families. The next most cited problem, cancer, is mentioned by just 1-in-20 Latinos (5%). Diabetes was the biggest health problem reported by both immigrant (16%) and non-immigrant Latinos (22%).

Vorapaxar is the company’s investigational antiplatelet medicine for the reduction of atherothrombotic events, when added to standard of care, in patients with a history of heart attack and no history of stroke or transient ischemic attack.

The Food and Drug Administraiton has approved a liquid formulation of an HIV drug made by Merck, the company said.

WHITEHOUSE STATION, N.J. — The Food and Drug Administraiton has approved a liquid formulation of an HIV drug made by Merck, the company said.

Merck announced the approval of Isentress (raltegravir) for oral suspension, aimed at small children with HIV. The drug may be used by patients as young as four weeks, and the full line of formulations of Isentress now includes the orlal suspension, as well as chewable tablets and film--coated tablets. The company plans to launch the oral suspension in the third quarter of this year.

CHICAGO — According to new research from Mintel, nearly 6-in-10 Americans who are current energy drink or shot users say they worry about the safety of these beverages. 

Despite fears over safety, the energy drink, shot and mix category has beat back detractors to show consistent annual growth from 2008 to 2013 sales. The market reported a 17% increase in 2012 and is projected to repeat that growth rate in 2013.

NEW YORK — The Environmental Protection Agency has recognized Target for its efforts to reduce its carbon emissions, the agency said.

According to the EPA, Target's technology center engineering team singlehandedly reduced the company's carbon emissions by 18,000 tons since 2006 and is committed to having 75% of Target buildings certified by the agency's Energy Star program by 2016.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — A new study is helping to provide a better understanding of vaccines for whooping cough, the Food and Drug Administration announced Wednesday. Based on an animal model, the study shows that acellular pertussis vaccines licensed by the FDA are effective in preventing the disease among those vaccinated, but suggests that they may not prevent infection from the bacteria that causes whooping cough in those vaccinated or its spread to other people, including those who may not be vaccinated.

WHITEHOUSE STATION, N.J. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new tablet form of an antifungal drug made by Merck, the company said Tuesday.

Merck announced the FDA approval of Noxafil (posaconazole) 100-mg delayed release tablets. The company also markets a 40-mg-per-milliliter oral suspension form of the drug. The new tablet formulation is designed to be taken in two 300-mg doses on the first day, followed by a 300-mg dose once per day.

Mass merchandise chain Meijer operates one of the largest all-clean diesel vehicle fleets in North America, the company said Monday.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Mass merchandise chain Meijer operates one of the largest all-clean diesel vehicle fleets in North America, the company said Monday.

The Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer, which runs 203 stores in the Midwest and Kentucky, said its fleet used various technologies to improve fuel efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint by nearly 60%. The company, which has 170 semi trucks, said its fleet was the first in North America to implement the federal clean emissions standards that feature near-zero emissions technology.
