As many as 85% of people with diabetes identified fatigue as one of their leading daily challenges, according to a recent survey of 8,000 diabetics commissioned by Diabetica Research Solutions.

Only 6% of survey respondents noted, however, that they use energy drinks.

The new store, which touts several full-service departments, also features Check It! self checkout lanes, Scan It! handheld devices that allow customers to scan and bag groceries while they shop, as well as Order It! deli kiosks, where shoppers may pre-order deli items. Redbox and Coinstar kiosks are also available, the company said.

Baby food brand Beech-Nut announced that its new facility has earned LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council and the Green Building Certification Institute.

CITY OF AMSTERDAM, N.Y. — Baby food brand Beech-Nut announced that its new facility has earned LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council and the Green Building Certification Institute.

The $124 million facility, which serves as Beech-Nut's headquarters and production plant, opened in June 2010 and was designed to achieve LEED certification for energy use, lighting, water and material use. Facility features and highlights include:

  • Annual energy savings equal to the energy demands of more than 2,000 people;

CINCINNATI — Kroger has released its fifth annual sustainability report.

Some of the highlights noted in the report include:

  • Kroger stores reduced overall energy consumption by 30% since 2000;

  • Company-wide, including all facilities, Kroger has saved more than 2.2 billion kilowatt hours;

  • Kroger completed its first wind energy project. Two wind turbines installed at Turkey Hill Dairy in Lancaster, Pa., will supply 25% of the dairy's annual electricity needs;

Incremental annual sales totaled $117.5 million across food, drug and mass retailers, with the exception of Walmart, according to SymphonyIRI Group. Out of all over-the-counter growth categories for the 52 weeks ended April 17, nutritional bars as a category took in more dollars on top of what they had generated the year before than any other category, bar none.

PHILADELPHIA — Philips is slated to launch a new LED light bulb, which will premiere at the LightFair International trade show.

Philips EnduraLED A21 17-watt bulb uses Philips' high-power, next-generation Luxeon LEDs and is designed to replace a 75-watt incandescent bulb, while reducing energy consumption by 80% and lasting 25 times longer, the company said. The light bulb also was developed to meet or exceed Energy Star qualifications for an LED-based replacement.
