VALLEY FORGE, Pa. — AmerisourceBergen on Wednesday announced the election of former Campbell Soup president and CEO Douglas Conant to its board, effective immediately. Conant’s election increases the number of AmerisourceBergen directors from nine to 10.

“Doug’s extensive business experience, exceptional leadership capabilities and proven track record for growing brands and businesses make him an excellent addition to our board,” stated Richard Gozon, AmerisourceBergen chairman.

Safeway late Wednesday announced that Steve Burd, its long-time chairman and CEO, will retire at the company's annual stockholders meeting on May 14, 2013.

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway late Wednesday announced that Steve Burd, its long-time chairman and CEO, will retire at the company's annual stockholders meeting on May 14, 2013. Safeway's board will begin a search for a successor, and will consider both internal and external candidates for the job, the grocer stated.

Supervalu last week settled its suit enforcing a non-compete clause against former president Leon Bergmann, the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal reported last week.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Supervalu last week settled its suit enforcing a non-compete clause against former president Leon Bergmann, the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal reported last week.

According to the report, Bergmann had resigned as president of Supervalu's independent business organization in favor of a position with Unified Grocers. Supervalu sued to enforce its confidentiality agreements.

Details of the settlement were not disclosed.

Karen Roberts was named EVP and general counsel for Wal-Mart Stores on Thursday amid the retailer’s ongoing investigation in possible violations of the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Karen Roberts was named EVP and general counsel for Wal-Mart Stores on Thursday amid the retailer’s ongoing investigation in possible violations of the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Roberts, 42, is a 17-year Walmart veteran who most recently served as EVP and president of Walmart Realty for Walmart U.S. However, prior to that, she held the position of SVP and chief compliance officer for Walmart U.S. where she oversaw the establishment of food and product safety programs and a recycling program.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The National Association of Chain Drug Stores announced on Wednesday that Jim Huber, EVP and CFO of NACDS, is retiring after 25 years of service. He will be succeed by David Fitzsimmons has been promoted to SVP of finance and administration.  

Fitzsimmons currently serves as VP finance and accounting. He will succeed Huber effective Dec. 21, 2012.

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — The parent company of Sears and Kmart has elected an executive from the New York Mets to its board of directors.

Sears Holdings announced the appointment of Mets VP player development and amateur scouting Paul DePodesta. His election to the board brings the total number of board members to eight.

A former executive of Car Toys has been appointed CFO of Bartell Drugs, the Seattle-based retail pharmacy chain said.

SEATTLE — A former executive of Car Toys has been appointed CFO of Bartell Drugs, the Seattle-based retail pharmacy chain said.

Rob Jensen has been appointed CFO of Bartell, where he will provide financial analysis and support for the 58-store chain, including supervisory oversight of accounting and finance, information technology, loss prevention and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act operations.

CINCINNATI — Long-time Fred Meyer executive Lynn Gust was named president of the 133-store Kroger division.

Gust, 59, joined Koriger in 1970 as a parcel clerk and most recently served as the company’s SVP of operations. Gust was appointed to that position in 2011 and prior to that he served as EVP of corporate merchandising and advertising. During his career Gust also served as VP of the Fred Meyer food group and SVP of store operations.

NEW YORK — The head of a regional supermarket chain based in the Pacific Northwest is stepping down, according to published reports.

The Bellingham, Wash., Herald reported that Haggen president and CEO Clarence Gabriel would step down and be replaced by three other members of its management team. The company did not elaborate on why Gabriel was resigning, according to the newspaper.

NEW YORK — Food Lion president Cathy Green Burns has left the company and is being succeeded by Beth Newlands Campbell as part of a major organizational shakeup at Delhaize America, according to published reports.

The shakeup comes on the heels of the Oct. 15 appointment of Roland Smith as president and CEO of Delhaize America and EVP of Delhaize Group. Smith, former president and CEO of The Wendy’s Co., replaced Ronald Hodge, who had been with the company for 33 years. Delhaize America is a division of Brussels-based Delhaize Group.

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — Johnson & Johnson has announced that Alex Gorsky will assume, effective Dec. 28, the chairman title and additional leadership responsibilities for the global health care company. 

Gorsky was appointed CEO of Johnson & Johnson in April 2012. Current chairman Bill Weldon will step down on Dec. 28 and plans to retire in the first quarter of 2013, after a brief transitional period.
