The Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug made by Eli Lilly and Bristol-Myers Squibb for treating a form of colorectal cancer, the two companies said.

NEW YORK — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug made by Eli Lilly and Bristol-Myers Squibb for treating a form of colorectal cancer, the two companies said.

Lilly and Bristol announced the approval of Erbitux (cetuximab) for treating colorectal cancer that is KRAS mutation-negative, expresses the epidermal growth factor receptor and has spread to other parts of the body, also known as metastasis. The drug is approved for use alongside a chemotherapy combination containing irinotecan, 5-fluorouracil and leucovorin, also known as FOLFIRI.

Lechleiter replaces Sanofi CEO Christopher Viehbacher as chairman.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new treatment for Type 2 diabetes made by Eli Lilly and Boehringer Ingelheim, the drug makers said.

The FDA approved Jentadueto (linagliptin and metformin) tablets, designed to be taken twice daily. The approval marks the second since the two companies announced their collaboration to develop diabetes drugs in January 2011; the first drug approved under the Lilly-BI partnership was Tradjenta (linagliptin), approved in May 2011.

INDIANAPOLIS — Drug maker Eli Lilly has expanded its Spanish-language portal, the company said Friday.

Subsidiary Lilly USA launched an expanded "En Español" section of the Lilly For Better Health website. The section features a 60-page interactive health album that provides tips on healthy eating, physical activity and managing health conditions, as well as health-and-wellness quizzes and risk assessments on weight management, diabetes and other topics.

Eli Lilly & Co. and Boehringer Ingelheim announced results of a 24-week, open-label arm of a phase-3 study of the investigational drug linagliptin combined with the generic drug metformin, presenting results at the International Diabetes Federation World Diabetes Conference in Dubai.

SEATTLE — Drug maker Eli Lilly is donating more than $4 million to the Infectious Disease Research Institute, the company said Thursday.

The company said the funding, which brings its total donations to IDRI to more than $20 million and its total funding for anti-tuberculosis efforts to more than $170 million, will support early-phase drug discovery efforts focused on identifying new drugs for tuberculosis, including strains of the virus that have grown resistant to multiple drugs. The Lilly TB Drug Discovery Initiative was started in 2007.

SAN DIEGO — Eli Lilly and Amylin Pharmaceuticals are ending their diabetes-drug alliance, the two companies said Tuesday.

Indianapolis-based Lilly and San Diego-based Amylin said they would terminate their alliance concerning exenatide, the active ingredient in the injected diabetes drug Byetta and its long-acting version, Bydureon, currently under investigation.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug made by Bristol-Myers Squibb and Eli Lilly & Co. for treating head and neck cancer, the agency said Monday.

The FDA announced the approval of Erbitux (cetuximab) for use with chemotherapy in treating head and neck cancer that had spread to other parts of the body. The drug originally was approved in 2004 for treating certain cases of late-stage colon cancer in patients who had stopped responding to chemotherapy.

INDIANAPOLIS — Eli Lilly is withdrawing one of its drugs from the market after clinical trials showed it to be ineffective.

The drug maker announced Tuesday the withdrawal of Xigris (drotrecogin alfa [activated]) from all markets following results of the "PROWESS-SHOCK" study, which found that it did not produce a statistically significant reduction in 28-day, all-cause death in patients with septic shock. The company said there were no new findings regarding the drug's safety profile.

The FDA announced the approval of generic olanzapine tablets and olanzapine orally disintegrating tablets, respectively generic versions of Lilly's Zyprexa and Zyprexa Zydus. Dr. Reddy's Labs and Teva Pharmaceuticals USA will manufacture olanzapine tablets, while Dr. Reddy's, Apotex and Par Pharmaceuticals will manufacture the orally disintegrating version.

Lilly and Amylin said Byetta (eventide) won approval from the FDA as an add-on therapy for patients with Type 2 diabetes taking Sanofi's Lantus (insulin glargine [rDNA origin]) who have not achieved adequate blood sugar control on Lantus alone.

Prasco will market authorized generic versions of Zyprexa (olanzapine) tablets and Zyprexa Zydis orally disintegrating tablets. The drugs are used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The phase-3 study, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, found that Cialis (tadalafil) improved erectile dysfunction and benign prostatic hyperplasia in men with both conditions. BPH is a condition in which the prostate enlarges, causing urinary symptoms.

INDIANAPOLIS — Two senior leaders at Eli Lilly are retiring, the company said Tuesday.

The Indianapolis-based drug maker announced the Dec. 31 retirements of Lilly SVP and Bio-Medicines president Bryce Carmine, and president of manufacturing operations Frank Deane. Carmine and Deane have worked at Lilly for 36 years and 33 years, respectively. Lilly USA president Dave Ricks will replace Carmine, while SVP global drug product manufacturing Maria Crowe will replace Deane.

Lilly said the FDA’s Anesthetic and Life Support Drugs Advisory Committee voted to recommend approval of Cymbalta (duloxetine hydrochloride) as a treatment for chronic lower back pain, though it did not support the drug as a treatment for chronic pain due to osteoarthritis. The drug currently is approved for treating diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain and fibromyalgia.
