BERN, Switzerland — Alliance Boots on Wednesday reported a double-digit profit gain for its year ended March 31. Underlying profit after tax was up 12.7% to $1.2 billion, though revenue was down slightly by 2.6% to $34.2 billion.

Galenica continues as an associate of AB Acquisitions Holdings. Stefano Pessina, executive chairman of Alliance Boots, continues as non-executive director of Galenica while Etienne Jornod, executive chairman of Galenica, stays as a non-executive director of Alliance Boots.

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway has launched its annual April fundraising campaign to benefit people with disabilities, the supermarket chain said Monday.

The company said The Safeway Foundation, its philanthropic arm, had launched the campaign to benefit Easter Seals, Special Olympics and other groups, saying its Support for People with Disabilities campaign had contributed more than $140 million.

AMSTERDAM, the Netherlands — Royal Ahold has appointed a new COO for its U.S. subsidiary, the company said Thursday.

Ahold, based in the Netherlands, announced that it had appointed James McCann as COO of Ahold USA, effective Jan. 1, 2013, replacing Carl Schlicker, who has announced his retirement. McCann, a 43-year-old native of the United Kingdom and currently Ahold's chief commercial and development officer who will continue as a member of the company's corporate board, began working for Ahold in 2011.

LONDON — Alliance Boots has continued to expand its presence in the global marketplace by opening its 200th store in Thailand.

The international pharmacy-led health and beauty group said the store — which was inaugurated by executive chairman Stefano Pessina, pharmaceutical wholesale division CEO Ornella Barra and health and beauty division CEO Alex Gourlay on Tuesday — is located in central Bangkok. Alliance Boots opened its first Boots store in Thailand in 1997, the company said.

The Retail Gazette reported that the Sainsbury's chain had launched "The Wells Challenge," which will assess the effects on the health of 10 families with the surname Wells as the chain's pharmacists provide them with health-related guidance and support.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Rumors are swirling that Tesco's U.S. division, Fresh & Easy, has signed on to open smaller-format stores.

The grocery store chain, which operates stores in California, Arizona and Nevada, plans to test a new concept, called Fresh & Easy Express, in San Pedro, Calif., according to blog Fresh & Easy Buzz. The report also said that the new format will be in the 4,000-sq.-ft. range, compared with its typical 10,000-sq.-ft. footprint.

LONDON — British retailer Tesco will launch its loyalty card program in the United States, according to published reports.

Tesco reportedly is launching the program in an effort to make a profit on its Fresh & Easy stores on the West Coast. The stores, which opened in 2007, have had difficulty turning a profit. The company now operates 175 stores, but has continued losing money.

The new card will allow customers to win points when they use it, much like loyalty cards it offers in the United Kingdom and other markets.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Tesco said it is turning its attention to its U.S. supermarket chain, according to the company's annual report.

According to the company, despite the fact that its U.S. operations, which include its Fresh & Easy supermarket chain, have been slower to recover when compared with its European counterparts, Tesco said, "We are now seeing signs of improvement. ... Customer feedback at Fresh & Easy remains excellent, and strong growth in customer numbers is driving steady sales improvement in each store."

SAN FRANCISCO — A new bill introduced by a California assemblywoman aims to curb the sale of alcohol to minors by prohibiting sales at self-service checkouts.

Assembly Bill 183, introduced last month by Fiona Ma, D-San Francisco and San Mateo Counties, was passed by the assembly committee. Assemblywoman Ma said that self-service checkouts are susceptible to technological failures, allowing minors to purchase alcohol.
