Costco announced on Thursday that its March sales increased 8% to $10.43 billion.

ISSAQUAH, Wash. — Costco announced on Thursday that its March sales increased 8% to $10.43 billion.

This year's five-week period, ended April 6, included 35 days of sales compared to 34 last year, reflecting the timing of Easter. This calendar shift positively impacted this year's net and comparable sales by an estimated 1 to 1.5%, the company stated.

During March, same-store sales rose 6% in the United States. For the total company, same-store sales increased 5% during that period.

Rite Aid on Thursday posted $1.9 billion in sales for the four weeks ended March 29, up 0.4%.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid on Thursday posted $1.9 billion in sales for the four weeks ended March 29, up 0.4%. 

Same-store sales increased 0.7% over the prior-year period. March front-end same store sales decreased 5%, with 4.1% of the decrease attributable to a shift in the timing of Easter, which falls on April 20 this year compared to March 31 last year.

Walgreens on Thursday reported March sales of $6.4 billion, an increase of 4.5% as compared with the same month in fiscal 2013.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens on Thursday reported March sales of $6.4 billion, an increase of 4.5% as compared with the same month in fiscal 2013.

With Easter falling on April 20 this year compared with March 31 last year, total front-end sales decreased 2.6% in March compared with the same month in fiscal 2013, while comparable store front-end sales decreased 3.4%. Customer traffic in comparable stores decreased 4% while basket size increased 0.6%. Walgreens will report combined comparable store sales for March and April with its April sales results.

LAKELAND, Fla. — Publix’s sales for second quarter 2013 were $7 billion, a 3.8% increase from last year, the company reported Thursday. Sales for the second quarter of 2013 were negatively impacted by approximately 1.3% due to the Easter holiday being in the first quarter of 2013, but in the second quarter of 2012. Comparable-store sales for the second quarter of 2013 increased 2.1%.

Publix’s sales for the first half of 2013 were $14.5 billion, a 5% increase. Comparable-store sales for the first half of 2013 increased 3%.

Total front-end sales decreased 2.9%, while comparable store front-end sales decreased 4.3%. Customer traffic in comparable stores decreased 5.9% while basket size increased 1.6%.

Rite Aid's same-store sales decreased 4% in April compared with April 2012 due to an earlier Easter and introductions of new generic drugs, the retail pharmacy chain said.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid's same-store sales decreased 4% in April compared with April 2012 due to an earlier Easter and introductions of new generic drugs, the retail pharmacy chain said Thursday.

The numbers released Thursday included a 3.5% decrease in sales on the front end and a 4.2% decrease in pharmacy sales, but the pharmacy figure included a 4.54% negative effect due to new generics. Same-store prescription count decreased by 0.2%.

Total sales for the month were $1.902 billion, a 4.6% decrease over April 2012's $1.993 billion.

Publix posted first quarter sales of $7.5 billion, representing a 6.1% increase.

LAKELAND, Fla. — Publix on Wednesday posted first-quarter sales of $7.5 billion, representing a 6.1% increase. The Easter holiday in the first quarter of 2013, which was in the second quarter of 2012, increased sales by approximately 1.3%, the grocer noted. 

Comparable-store sales for the first quarter of 2013 increased 3.9%.

WASHINGTON — According to a new spending survey from the National Retail Federation (NRF), consumer spending for Easter 2013 will be flat when compared to the holiday last year.

The NRF 2013 Easter Spending Survey, conducted by BIGinsight, was designed to gauge consumer behavior and shopping trends related to Easter. The poll of 5,050 consumers was conducted from March 5 to 11, 2013.

Rite Aid is stocking Easter and spring supplies at its stores in anticipation of the holiday and season, the retail pharmacy chain said Monday.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid is stocking Easter and spring supplies at its stores in anticipation of the holiday and season, the retail pharmacy chain said Monday.

The 4,623-store chain said items at its stores included chocolate bunnies, marshmallow Peeps, SweeTarts, Ducks & Bunnies, Cadbury Eggs and other candy brands, as well as baskets and other accessories.

In addition, the company is selling such gardening supplies as planters, figurines, bird feeders, wind chimes and outdoor fountains and lighting, including solar-powered devices.

CHICAGO — Shopper activity will continue to improve intermittently through the first half of 2013, according to ShopperTrak, the world's largest counter of retail foot traffic.

ShopperTrak estimates during the first quarter of 2013, national retail sales will increase 3.2% and retail foot traffic will increase 3.5%, when compared to the same period last year. The company estimates during the second quarter of 2013, national retail sales will increase 2.9%, though foot traffic will remain flat with a 0% change, when compared to the same period in 2012.

Seasonal candy generates 40% to 45% of total category sales, according to data from the National Confectioners Association. Christmas candy sales are expected to track last year’s sales, but with Easter falling early this year, NCA recommends that retailers set Easter candy as Valentine’s Day products are taken down. 


Products with play value remain popular with consumers, but manufacturers say those with a “try me” feature have the strongest sell-through.
