Giant Eagle has named Laura Shapira Karet CEO and John Lucot president and COO. Both appointments are effective Jan. 9, 2012.

PITTSBURGH — Giant Eagle has named Laura Shapira Karet CEO and John Lucot president and COO. Both appointments are effective Jan. 9, 2012.

Karet, 42, is taking over the position from her father David Shapira, who will assume the position of executive chairman of Giant Eagle's board of directors. Shapira has served as CEO since 1980.

PITTSBURGH — Giant Eagle this past week introduced the NuVal nutritional scoring system throughout locations in Columbus, Ohio, and Frederick, Md.

Intended to help customers make quick, informed food choices, the NuVal nutritional scoring system gives more than 20,000 food and beverages a score ranging from 1 to 100 — the higher the score, the better the nutrition. Scores are posted right on the shelf tag, along with nutritional attributes like “gluten free” and “good source of fiber.”

Giant Eagle has joined forces with allergy medication Allegra to offer free in-store allergy screenings for patients ages 18 years and older.

PITTSBURGH — Giant Eagle has joined forces with allergy medication Allegra to offer free in-store allergy screenings for patients ages 18 years and older.

The supermarket retailer said screenings would be held on Saturday at select stores in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The free screenings also were held earlier this month on Sept. 10 (stores across Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia) and Sept. 17 (stores across Ohio and Pennsylvania).

PITTSBURGH — Giant Eagle is celebrating its locally and regionally grown produce with a new video on its website.

The retailer said that it is taking several steps to educate consumers on which fruits and vegetables are at their peak season throughout the year, and is further relaying this message through its video, which can be viewed on the company's website.

PITTSBURGH — Giant Eagle was named the largest Pittsburgh-area private company, with 2010 revenues of $8.6 billion, by the Pittsburgh Business Times in a report published Friday.

The Pittsburgh Business Times ranks the largest Pittsburgh-area private companies by 2010 revenue. Coming in at No. 6 on the list was Gateway Health Plan, with $1.4 billion in revenue. GNC ranked No. 4 with $1.8 billion in 2010 revenue.
