As drug store chains like Walgreens, Duane Reade, Rite Aid and Bartell Drugs — not to mention a few independents as well — go upscale, one of the noticeable changes they make is to the beauty department. But a key element, beauty futurist Jeanine Recckio told DSN, is "retailtainment." In other words, beauty should be fun, and as more pharmacy retailers understand that, the line that divides their beauty departments from those of specialty and department stores will become increasingly thin.

DSN sat down with Calvin Peters, Duane Reade's PR/online manager, to talk about the launch of the social game Ingress, a mobile platform utilizing location-based services to bridge the game into the physical world, and how the company hopes the game will be the next rung in the evolutionary ladder of social retailing helping to drive foot traffic into its stores.

Earlier this month, Walgreens announced that immunization records would be sent directly from its more than 7,800 Walgreens and Duane Reade stores and 350 Take Care Clinics to primary care providers over Surescripts’ electronic prescribing network using Surescripts’ Clinical Interoperability services. And later this year, the company plans to share immunization data with local and state public health agencies, and share Take Care Clinic patient summaries with primary care providers. Drug Store News recently had the opportunity to speak with Surescripts president and CEO Harry Totonis about the new service.

NEW YORK — A New York-based distribution, merchandising and analytics firm has hired a former executive from Rite Aid and Duane Reade.

L&R Distributors announced Wednesday the hiring of Mike Cirilli as VP category management and procurement. L&R distributes more than 30,000 general merchandise, health, beauty and cosmetics products, pointing more than 12,000 points of distribution across the supermarket, drug, independent and mass-merchandise channels.
