SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. The Food and Drug Administration has approved a biotech drug for treating cancer of the stomach and esophageal junction.

 

Genentech, a subsidiary of Swiss drug maker Roche, announced Wednesday the approval of Herceptin (trastuzumab) as a treatment for cancer of the stomach that includes the HER2 gene and has spread to other parts of the body, when combined with chemotherapy. The drug has long since had approval as a treatment for HER2-positive breast cancer.

CAMP HILL, Pa. One week after Walgreens announced that it was offering pertussis immunizations at its California locations, Rite Aid has followed suit.

Rite Aid said Monday that pharmacists at more than 500 Rite Aid stores across the state will offer pertussis, or whooping cough, vaccinations to individuals ages 7 years and older. The disease already has claimed the lives of nine infants in the state and is on pace to become the worst epidemic the state has seen in 50 years.

CINCINNATI Procter & Gamble is offering Target shoppers an opportunity to save the lives of children with cancer in a new support partnership.

From Sept. 19 to Sept. 25, Target guests can support the efforts of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital by purchasing such P&G brands as Tide, Charmin, Bounty and Pampers at Target stores nationwide. For every purchase of participating brands during the week-long program, 5% of the purchase price will be donated to St. Jude, with a total donation of up to $700,000.

PERRYSBURG, Ohio Rexam is marketing a programmable pill timer that fits on its prescription vials that was developed under a partnership with Med Time Technology.

 

The two companies announced Tuesday the introduction of the Pill Timer, which uses software that can be programmed with audio and visual alerts to help people properly take their prescription medications. The Detroit-based Henry Ford Health System is one of the first healthcare organizations to adopt the product.

ROCKVILLE, Md. The Food and Drug Administration on Friday issued a warning to consumers not to take Miracle Mineral Solution, an oral liquid also known as “Miracle Mineral Supplement” or “MMS.”

 

The product, when used as directed, produces an industrial bleach that can cause serious harm to health.

 

 

The FDA has received several reports of health injuries from consumers using this product, including severe nausea, vomiting, and life-threatening low blood pressure from dehydration.
