FLINT, Mich. — Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy recently took "extreme couponing" to a new level, not to save money for customers, but to collect items for charity.

Diplomat sponsored a contest in which 12 employees competed to see who could buy the most food items and toiletries for local charities using only $25 and coupons. With $300, employees bought $2,160 worth of groceries, which will be donated to Flint, Mich.-based Carriage Town Ministries and St. Luke N.E.W. Life Center.

FLINT, Mich. — Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy has several new programs in the works to promote health and wellness among its employees, the company said.

Diplomat announced a new fitness center at its headquarters that will include stationary bikes, strength-training machines, ellipticals, medicine balls, an exercise video center and a Wii system.

TAMPA, Fla. — Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy CEO Phil Hagerman has joined the board of directors of the National Association of Specialty Pharmacy, the group said Tuesday.

The NASP also noted that Diplomat had joined it as a founding member. Diplomat is the largest privately-owned specialty pharmacy in the country, with revenues exceeding $1.1 billion in 2012.

FLINT, Mich. — A clinical technology manager at Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy has received an award from a state pharmacy association.

Diplomat said Monday that Michael Crowe had received the Fellow of Michigan Pharmacists Association award, announced over the weekend at the MPA's annual convention and exposition in Detroit. According to the MPA, the award "recognizes achievements and dedication to the practice of pharmacy, the community and MPA. The distinction signifies the recipient's actions well beyond the regular practice toward the advancement of pharmacy."

FLINT, Mich. — Inc. magazine has named Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy as one of the country's top 100 job creators, the privately owned company said.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Any trickle-down of an improving economy hasn't trickled down to Fred's consumer base, Bruce Efird, Fred's CEO, told analysts Tuesday morning in discussing the discounter's third-quarter results. "During the third quarter we continue to see generally weak economic conditions throughout the Southeast which are clearly weighing heavily on our customers and influencing how they shop for their basic needs," he said. "It's more evident that things are not getting better for our core customers."

FLINT, Mich. — Nearly all healthcare professionals are satisfied with Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy's services, according to results of a survey released Monday.

The privately owned specialty pharmacy company announced the results of its annual physician satisfaction survey, conducted by Gartner & Associates, showing that 98% of respondents were satisfied overall with Diplomat; 99% said the company met their expectations; and 91% said it exceeded the service levels of other pharmacies.

NEW YORK — While saying the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act — whose constitutionality the Supreme Court largely upheld in a 5-4 decision Thursday — would be beneficial by creating a larger population of insured patients, the leader of one of the country's largest specialty pharmacies said it didn't address the problem of waste in health care, according to published reports.

FLINT, Mich. — Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy has named a new president.

Gary Kadlec has been appointed president of Diplomat, reporting to the specialty pharmacy provider CEO's Philip Hagerman. As president, Kadlec will support and drive the sales, clinical, managed care, new business and operations teams at the company. Prior to joining Diplomat, Kadlec was president and CEO of ExcelleRx, an Omnicare company.

WHAT IT MEANS AND WHY IT'S IMPORTANT — The city of Flint, Mich., is probably most famous for two things: being the birthplace of General Motors and the prolonged economic decline that followed the automaker's departure from the city.

But Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy is looking to reverse that trend. Despite starting out as a single store owned by CEO Phil Hagerman and his father, the privately owned company has grown to be so big that it now has a swanky new headquarters and is well on its way to having 800 employees.
