The Food and Drug Administration has given tentative approval to two generic diabetes drugs made by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, the Indian drug maker said.

MUMBAI, India — The Food and Drug Administration has given tentative approval to two generic diabetes drugs made by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, the Indian drug maker said.

Sun announced the tentative approvals for sitagliptin tablets in the 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg strengths and metformin hydrochloride extended-release tablets in the 500 mg and 1,000 mg strengths. The drugs are respectively generic versions of Merck's Januvia and Santarus' Glumetza.

INDIANAPOLIS — Drug makers Boehringer Ingelheim and Eli Lilly have created a new online educational program for people with Type 2 diabetes.

The companies, which have had a deal to develop drugs for diabetes since January 2011 and co-market the drugs Tradjenta (linagliptin) and Jentadueto (linagliptin and metformin), announced Thursday the creation of My Well Planner, a lifestyle-improvement program for adults with the disease.

Last month, the Food and Drug Administration approved Tradjenta (linagliptin), an oral Type 2 diabetes drug made by German drug maker Boehringer Ingelheim and Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly. The drug belongs to the class known as dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors, which also includes Merck’s Januvia (sitagliptin). NEW YORK — While several drugs to treat Type 2 diabetes are on the market, researchers have found that the best first-line option is metformin.

Led by Wendy Bennett, an assistant professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, researchers reviewed 140 trials and 26 observational studies of head-to-head comparisons of monotherapy or combination therapy that reported intermediate or long-term clinical outcomes or harms of six oral diabetes medications.

PRINCETON, N.J. — A new oral treatment for Type 2 diabetes hit the shelves Friday.

Bristol-Myers Squibb and AstraZeneca announced the availability of Kombiglyze XR (saxagliptin and metformin hydrochloride), which the companies called the only once-daily treatment for diabetes that combined metformin with a DPP-4 inhibitor, the drug class to which saxagliptin belongs.

The drug is designed for use alongside diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with Type 2 diabetes.
