NEW YORK If there’s a huckster swindling supplements as the latest cure-all, turns out it’s not a supplement they’re swindling after all. If not an illicit pharmaceutical outright, it’s at the very least a mismarketed snake oil, and this band of supplement associations is helping to stamp those hucksters out.

NEW YORK What it means is a stronger dietary supplement industry sans criticism that the industry is rampant with hucksters trying to talk consumers into the miracle cure du jour. Why it’s important: Well, the industry generates some $6 billion in mass channel sales (food, drug and mass, including Walmart), up 7%, according to Nielsen data, and the more confidence consumers have in this category, the more likely they are to buy.

NEW YORK The most significant piece of news to come out of this (outside of the fact that CRN’s popular “Life…supplemented” campaign will continue) is the proposed survey of registered dieticians, nurse practitioners and pharmacists. Because while prior surveys of doctors and registered nurses that teased out exactly how many of those healthcare practitioners supplement themselves, and recommend that they’re patients do so as well, is important, more important will be measuring the response from this survey.

NEW YORK It is critical that the dietary supplement industry extol the benefit and value associated with supplementing for health and wellness, especially as today’s legislators determine what health care will look like tomorrow, and how patients will be incentivized into being more proactive around the pursuit of preventative health behaviors.

Sales of vitamins across food, drug and mass outlets (minus Walmart) grew by a whopping 8.9% to $2.7 billion for the 52 weeks ended Nov. 30, 2008, according to data from Information Resources Inc. That kind of growth affirms an October 2008 survey released by the Council for Responsible Nutrition that suggested the majority of dietary supplement users didn’t cut back on their supplement regimens, despite the tougher economy. According to the survey, 51% of supplement users indicated that the economy’s ills wouldn’t force them to cut back on their supplement-purchasing habits. Survey results also showed that of the 51% who didn’t plan on cutting back their supplement routine, 13% reported supplements were an essential part of their overall wellness regimen — something they couldn’t do without.
