WASHINGTON — The Council for Responsible Nutrition and the Natural Products Association on Wednesday announced they have met with the entire freshman class of the 113th Congress, including 83 offices in the House of Representatives and 14 offices in the Senate, as part of their educational efforts to ensure that newly elected members of Congress have accurate information about dietary supplements and their role in good health. 

NEW YORK — The National Advertising Division last week recommended that Interhealth Nutraceuticals discontinue certain claims for the company’s Zychrome dietary supplements, products that are promoted for the management of insulin levels.

Print and internet claims made by Interhealth for its Zychrome chromium compound, also known as chromium dinicocysteinate, were challenged by Nutrition 21, the manufacturer of a competing product, Chromax, a chromium picolinate product. Interhealth had been making comparison claims against the supplement ingredient in Chromax. 

NEW YORK — The National Advertising Division earlier this week recommended that USPLabs discontinue claims referencing “clinical” or “university” studies for the company’s AP Dietary Supplement. NAD further recommended that the advertiser modify the claim “Award Winning Nutrient Partitioning Agent” to disclose that the designation was awarded by “Planet Muscle Magazine” in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

WASHINGTON — Three Democratic lawmakers on Wednesday released a report that found inconsistencies in the labeling and classification of energy drinks, extensive marketing to adolescents and young adults through social media and events, and high caffeine levels that exceed what is considered safe in soda by the Food and Drug Administration. The report was compiled using responses from 14 energy drink companies received by Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass., and Sens. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., and Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., from their investigation into the industry.

WASHINGTON — The Council for Responsible Nutrition on Monday named six new members, including Aurora Algae, Nature’s Sources, Reckitt Benckiser, Sirio Pharma, Watson and international member JJ Health.    

British conglomerate Reckitt Benckiser recently acquired Schiff Nutrition, marking the entry of a new major CPG player into the dietary supplement space. Reckitt Benckiser now markets several supplement brands including Digestive Advantage, MegaRed and Schiff Move Free. 

BETHESDA, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday advised consumers not to purchase or use three separate sexual enhancement products that are being promoted as dietary supplements because they contain undeclared and unapproved prescription-only ingredients. 

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Government Accountability Office on Monday advised the Food and Drug Administration to establish a time frame on New Dietary Ingredient guidance, as well as guidance clarifying whether a liquid product may be labeled and marketed as a dietary supplement or as a conventional food with added ingredients. Those two guidelines will help the agency use adverse event reports in overseeing dietary supplement products, the GAO stated.

WASHINGTON — The Council for Responsible Nutrition on Tuesday announced the addition of six new members, including voting members Evolva Nutrition and NutraGenesis and associate members American Nurse Practitioner Foundation, HFL Sport Science, Intertek Cantox and Loeb & Loeb.  

Evolva Nutrition recently acquired the rights to the resveratrol business formerly owned by Fluxome Science A/S in Denmark. NutraGenesis is a provider of proprietary, branded nutraceutical ingredients that are designed for the dietary supplement, food and beverage marketplaces.

While pharmacists are reported as the primary source of information on OTCs, doctors are the ‘go-to’ on vitamins and dietary supplements, according to an online survey of more than 900 AccentHealth viewers conducted in late 2012. Two-in-5 survey participants reported that they were primarily given information about their supplements from their doctor, followed by 28% who received that information from a friend or relative, and 18% who researched their supplements online.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — U.S. marshals, acting on behalf of the Food and Drug Administration, on Thursday seized tainted products from Globe All Wellness in Hollywood, Fla. The products may be unsafe because they contain an undisclosed active pharmaceutical ingredient.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — A federal judge has ordered a California company and its owner to stop manufacturing and distributing drugs and dietary supplements in domestic commerce until their manufacturing operations comply with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, the Food and Drug Administration reported Friday.
