A person with either elevated sodium levels and low potassium levels could be at risk of raised blood pressure which increases the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Currently, most people consume too much sodium and not enough potassium.

"If we consume too much calcium without sufficient magnesium, the excess calcium is not utilized correctly and may actually become toxic, causing painful conditions, such as some forms of arthritis, kidney stones, osteoporosis and calcification of the arteries leading to heart attack and cardiovascular disease," Dean said.

ATLANTA Americans' sodium intake is at a record high, with less than 10% of adults making a conscious effort to limit their consumption, according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"Sodium Intake in Adults – United States, 2005-2006," which was published on Thursday in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, underscored the amount of sodium the average American consumes each day and which foods contain the highest levels of sodium.
