LOUISVILLE, Ky., and PRINCETON, N.J. — A healthcare company and a drug maker have entered a one-year research partnership to explore diabetes treatment and care.

Humana and Novo Nordisk said its researchers will identify opportunities to change how patients might be treated to improve quality and outcomes for the millions of people who battle diabetes. Humana is working through its research affiliate, Competitive Health Analytics, on this partnership, Humana noted.

FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J. — A diabetes research organization and a medical technology company have extended their partnership.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and medical supply manufacturer BD — which previously collaborated to enhance the use of insulin pumps in patients with Type 1 diabetes — said they will accelerate the development of BD's proprietary glucose-sensing technology, which has shown promise in providing very accurate and reliable continuous glucose information.

Sorrentino will have responsibility for the company's accounting, treasury, tax, legal and information technology functions, and will partner with other senior executives to oversee companywide business operations. Prior to joining the company, he served as VP and corporate controller at CompuPay.

HOUSTON — Novo Nordisk is starting an organization in Houston designed to provide assistance to local diabetes education programs, the Danish drug maker said Tuesday.

The company announced that it was accepting applications from local organizations for funding from Novo Nordisk Community Care Houston, one of more than 20 Novo Nordisk Community Care programs started in 2011 that provide funding to local groups. The drug maker is investing $80,000 on the Houston initiative.

RARITAN, N.J. — A Johnson & Johnson subsidiary is seeking approval for a Type 2 diabetes treatment.

Janssen Research and Development has submitted a new drug application to the Food and Drug Administration for the approval of canagliflozin — an investigational oral, once-daily, selective sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitor — for use in adult patients. Canagliflozin blocks the reabsorption of glucose by the kidney, increasing glucose excretion and lowering blood glucose levels, the company said.

FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J. — Medical supply manufacturer BD has released a syringe with a shorter needle designed to reduce discomfort in patients with diabetes who must inject insulin, the company said Tuesday.

BD announced the introduction of the ultra-fine 6mm needle, saying more than 80% of patients expressed a preference for it in trials, and a recent article published by the American Association of Diabetes Educators recognized the safety and efficacy of shorter needles.

The needle is designed to deliver insulin subcutaneously in adults and children.

Drug maker Novo Nordisk announced Tuesday the additional approval of Levemir (insulin detemir [rDNA origin]). The insulin already was approved for Type 1 diabetes in older children and adults and Type 2 diabetes in adults, and the drug maker said the new FDA approval made Levemir the only basal insulin analog for use in the 2 to 5 year age group.

Takeda announced that the FDA issued a complete response letter for its regulatory applications for the Type 2 diabetes drug alogliptin and a combination pill that includes alogliptin and pioglitazone, the active ingredient in the drug Actos.

Reuters reported that GSK's $13-per-share, $2.6 billion offer for HGS would give the former full control of Benlysta (belimumab), the first new drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration for lupus in more than half a century. The two companies developed the drug together under a partnership, and the drug received approval in March 2011.
