INDIANAPOLIS — A drug marketed by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lilly reduced blood sugar in elderly patients with Type 2 diabetes and in adults with diabetic nephropathy, according to results of three studies presented at a diabetes meeting in Berlin.

ARLINGTON, Va. — More than three-quarters of physicians think the federal government should regulate foods with unhealthy ingredients, while 79% say employers should fund weight-loss programs for employees, according to results of a survey presented Tuesday at a diabetes conference.

The survey, conducted by Joslin Diabetes Center and healthcare research firm WorldOne, included more than 150 endocrinologists and primary care physicians, and results were presented at Joslin's Diabetes Innovation 2012 conference.

The companies, which have had a deal to develop drugs for diabetes since January 2011 and co-market the drugs Tradjenta (linagliptin) and Jentadueto (linagliptin and metformin), announced Thursday the creation of My Well Planner, a lifestyle-improvement program for adults with the disease.

INDIANPOLIS — Lilly Diabetes announced that it has launched a new mobile application designed for caregivers and healthcare providers who support people with Type 1 diabetes.

The Lilly Glucagon mobile app is an interactive tool designed to teach caregivers how to use severe hypoglycemia treatment Glucagon (1-mg) for injection through simulated practice, thus helping caregivers better understand Glucagon's role in diabetes management. SILVER SPRING, Md. — Regulators have approved a biotech drug made by Genentech for treating a complication related to diabetes.

The Food and Drug Administration approved Lucentis (ranibizumab) for diabetic macular edema, a cause of vision loss in people with diabetes. The drug already was approved for age-related macular degeneration.

NEW YORK — Philosys is seeking regulatory approval from the Food and Drug Administration for its blood-glucose monitoring system.

Gmate Smart, which the company calls "the smallest and most innovative meter in the world," is a blood-glucose meter that works with the headphone connector of the iPhone, iPad and iPod.
