NEWARK, Calif. — Drug maker Depomed has sold its interests in royalty and milestone payments for several Type 2 diabetes drugs to PDL BioPharma, Depomed said.

The drug maker announced that it had sold its interest in the Type 2 diabetes therapeutic area to PDL for $240.5 million, which it plans to use to acquire rights to products it said would drive long-term growth and build on its expertise in pain and neurology.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Patients taking a drug used for weight loss were able to reduce their chances of developing Type 2 diabetes, according to a new study.

According to data from a 475-patient study published in the journal Diabetes Care, Vivus' Qsymia (phentermine and topiramate) reduced the annualized incidence rate of Type 2 diabetes by up to 78.7% in high-risk, overweight or obese patients with prediabetes or metabolic syndrome. Prediabetes is a condition in which a person has elevated blood sugar and a high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — A new mobile game app designed by CyberDoctor showed improvements in medication adherence, diet and exercise in diabetes patients, according to a study.

The company said that breakthrough clinical trial results for the game, called PatientPartner," documented for the first time the effectiveness of a story-driven game in changing health behavior and biomarkers. The study was conducted among 100 nonadherence patients at Hershey, Pa.-based Pinnacle Health Systems and presented at the Health2.0 Conference Wednesday in Santa Clara, Calif.

NEW YORK — The global market for Type 2 diabetes will nearly double over the next six years, according to a new report.

GBI Research announced the release of a study Tuesday indicating that the market will grow from 2012's $20.4 billion to $38.8 billion by 2019, at an annual growth rate of 10.2%. The United States' market, meanwhile, will more than double, from $12.7 billion last year to $27.2 billion in 2019.

NEWARK, Calif. — Drug maker Depomed has expanded the geographic scope of a license agreement it has with Merck for diabetes drugs, the company said.

The licensing agreement, which the two companies entered in July 2009, gives Merck a non-exclusive license and other rights to certain Depomed patents for extended-release metformin, while Depomed will receive "modest" royalties on net product sales of the drug Janumet XR (sitagliptin; metformin hydrochloride) in countries in which the licensed patents cover the product.

MUMBAI, India — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic diabetes drug made by Lupin, the company said.

Lupin, based in India, received approval for metformin hydrochloride extended-release tablets in the 500-mg and 1,000-mg strengths. The drug is a generic version of Santarus' Glumetza.

Glumetza had sales of about $144 million during the 12-month period that ended in March, according to IMS Health. The drug is an extended-release formulation of metformin hydrochloride, a widely prescribed drug used for treating Type 2 diabetes.

HAIFA, Israel — Self-reported medication adherence rates increased among Type 2 diabetes patients using a mobile app, the maker of the app said Monday.

MediSafe Project said it reviewed adherence rates among Type 2 diabetic users of its app, finding compliance rates at least 26% higher than the generate rate for long-term diabetes therapies, which the World Health Organization reports as 50%. A January 2013 study of the app, which the company launched in November 2012, found similar rates.

A new study from the University of Iowa confirms what researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported last year: that the number and severity of lower-limb amputations among American diabetics is down “dramatically” in recent years. The latest findings, reported by Drug Store News Monday, show a nearly 29% overall drop in lower-limb amputations among Medicare patients with diabetes between 2000 and 2010. And there was a “striking” decrease in the severity of such amputations, as well, according to study author Phinit Phisitkul.
