Study: Most physicians support employer weight-loss programs, unhealthy food regulations

More than three-quarters of physicians think the federal government should regulate foods with unhealthy ingredients, while 79% say employers should fund weight-loss programs for employees, according to results of a survey presented Tuesday at a diabetes conference.

The survey, conducted by Joslin Diabetes Center and healthcare research firm WorldOne, included more than 150 endocrinologists and primary care physicians, and results were presented at Joslin's Diabetes Innovation 2012 conference.

Novo Nordisk announced Wednesday that it would start accepting applications for Novo Nordisk Community Care Madison/Milwaukee, setting aside $100,000 for local programs that educate people with Type 2 diabetes. The partnerships are part of the company's Novo Nordisk Community Care program.

INDIANAPOLIS — Drug makers Boehringer Ingelheim and Eli Lilly have created a new online educational program for people with Type 2 diabetes.

The companies, which have had a deal to develop drugs for diabetes since January 2011 and co-market the drugs Tradjenta (linagliptin) and Jentadueto (linagliptin and metformin), announced Thursday the creation of My Well Planner, a lifestyle-improvement program for adults with the disease.

To help its customers better understand this illness, Sam's Club pharmacy locations are offering free diabetes and vision screenings (diabetes is a leading cause of blindness) for members and the public on Saturday, Sept. 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Ranbaxy Labs has launched an authorized generic version of a diabetes drug made by Takeda Pharmaceutical, Ranbaxy said Friday.

PRINCETON, N.J. — Ranbaxy Labs has launched an authorized generic version of a diabetes drug made by Takeda Pharmaceutical, Ranbaxy said Friday.

Ranbaxy announced the launch, through subsidiary Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals and under an agreement with Takeda, of pioglitazone hydrochloride tablets, an authorized generic version of Takeda's Actos. An authorized generic is a branded drug marketed at a reduced price under its generic name, typically by a third-party company operating under contract with the original branded drug's manufacturer.

Drug maker Takeda Pharmaceutical has resubmitted regulatory approval applications for two drugs designed to treat diabetes, the company said.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Drug maker Takeda Pharmaceutical has resubmitted regulatory approval applications for two drugs designed to treat diabetes, the company said.

Takeda announced the resubmission to the Food and Drug Administration of applications for alogliptin and a drug that combines alogliptin with pioglitazone, the active ingredient in the Takeda drug Actos.

NEW YORK — Extended use of the oral DPP-4 inhibitor linagliptin to lower blood-glucose levels by Type 2 diabetes patients is effective, according to a new study.

A team of eight researchers — four of which work for drug maker Boehringer Ingelheim — examined 2,121 Type 2 diabetes patients that had taken part in four previous 24-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials in order to monitor them for a further 78 weeks. The participants who took part in the extended trial came from 231 sites in 32 countries.
