The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new topical drug for treating scars made by Oculus Innovative Sciences, the drug maker said Wednesday.

PETALUMA, Calif. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new topical drug for treating scars made by Oculus Innovative Sciences, the drug maker said Wednesday.

The FDA has approved Microcyn scar-management hydrogel, used to treat scars resulting from burns, surgery and trauma wounds. Oculus and a partnering company, Quinnova Pharmaceuticals, intend to start selling the drug in the first half of next year.

Perrigo Co. announced that it has received final approval from the Food and Drug Administration for its abbreviated new drug applications for fluocinolone acetonide scalp oil, 0.01%, the generic equivalent to Derma-Smoothe/FS Scalp Oil, and fluocinolone acetonide topical oil, 0.01%, the generic equivalent to Derma-Smoothe/FS Body Oil.

ALLEGAN, Mich. — Perrigo Co. today announced that it has received final approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its abbreviated new drug applications for fluocinolone acetonide scalp oil, 0.01%, the generic equivalent to Derma-Smoothe/FS Scalp Oil, and fluocinolone acetonide topical oil, 0.01%, the generic equivalent to Derma-Smoothe/FS Body Oil. Perrigo expects to begin shipments of both products next month.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved a treatment for dermatitis made by Perrigo under a collaboration with Chicago-based Cobrek Pharmaceutical.

ALLEGAN, Mich. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a treatment for dermatitis made by Perrigo under a collaboration with Chicago-based Cobrek Pharmaceutical.

The drug maker said Tuesday that the FDA approved ketoconazole foam in the 2% strength. The drug is a generic version of Stiefel Labs' Extina, a topical drug used to treat seborrheic dermatitis in patients ages 12 years and older with healthy immune systems.

Extina has annual sales of about $10 million, according to Perrigo.

MAPLE GROVE, Minn. — Upsher-Smith Labs has launched a topical medication for itching and inflammation of the skin resulting from such conditions as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis, the company said Monday.

Upsher-Smith announced the launch of Trianex (triamcinolone acetonide) ointment, which the company described as a prescription topical corticosteroid that offers the feel of a cream and the strength of an ointment.

WASHINGTON — More than 200 drugs are under development in the United States for treating skin diseases, according to the country’s largest pharmaceutical industry trade group.

The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America said Monday that the country’s drug makers were developing 263 medicines for skin diseases that affect more than one-third of the U.S population. A study by the Lewin Group found that the annual total cost of skin diseases was $39.3 billion in 2005.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — A milk formula for babies made by Gerber Products can reduce the risk of atopic dermatitis, and Gerber has the Food and Drug Administration’s permission to say so.

Gerber said Thursday that its Good Start milk-based formulas were the first and only infant formulas to meet the FDA’s criteria for a qualified health claim. The partially hydrolyzed formula may reduce a baby’s risk of developing atopic dermatitis in the first year.
