Army & Air Force Exchange Service Associate Tony Garcia received the Department of Defense Outstanding Employee with a Disability Award for 2013 at the Exchange headquarters Nov. 15, the Exchange announced Tuesday.

DALLAS — Army and Air Force Exchange Service Associate Tony Garcia received the Department of Defense Outstanding Employee with a Disability Award for 2013 at the Exchange headquarters Nov. 15, the Exchange announced Tuesday.  

The award highlights the accomplishments and abilities of employees with disabilities who have made significant contributions to their organization’s mission.

Garcia, a custodial Associate at the Fort Knox, Ky., Exchange Main store, was one of 19 DoD employees worldwide selected to receive the honor this year.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Pharmacy automation manufacturer Kirby Lester has launched a version of one of its tablet counters with streamlined verification software.

The company announced the launch of KL1Plus, which it said combines the KL1 tablet counter with the updated software. The device will be introduced at the National Community Pharmacists Association and Department of Defense Joint Forces Pharmacy Services annual convention in San Diego this month.

The Defense Department has instructed AAFES to convert the Commanding General’s position to a nonmilitary director/CEO position, marking the first time in the AAFES’s 116-year history that a civilian will lead the organization. COO Mike Howard will take over as acting director/CEO as the organization’s board seeks a permanent replacement.

More than 250,000 U.S. military personnel, family members, retirees and others in the Department of Defense Tricare pharmacy benefits program, and their supporters, so far have signed petitions demanding access to Walgreens pharmacies under the Tricare pharmacy program, Walgreens reported Thursday.

The pace of petition signatures from Tricare members seeking to retain access to Walgreens and their supporters has reached more than 10,000 per week in recent weeks, the pharmacy operator added.

The American Pharmacists Association has appointed Stacia Spridgen as director of its federal pharmacy program, the group said Wednesday.

WASHINGTON — The American Pharmacists Association has appointed Stacia Spridgen as director of its federal pharmacy program, the group said Wednesday.

The APhA said Spridgen, a retired Army lieutenant colonel, would be responsible for all aspects of the APhA's federal pharmacy programs, including coordination of the annual Federal Forum and oversight management of the Department of Defense Joint Forces Pharmacy Seminar, fostering a collaborative alliance between the APhA and the federal pharmacy sector and developing relationships in the pharmaceutical industry.

What's more, Congress should adopt alternative cost-saving strategies, including utilizing local pharmacists. WASHINGTON — Pharmacy technicians certified through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board maximize their training experiences at the Department of Defense Military Education and Training Campus in Fort Sam Houston, Texas, the PTCB said.

Prior to graduating, students in the METC Pharmacy Technician Training Program are encouraged to take the PTCB’s Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam and gain national recognition as certified pharmacy technicians. Pharmacy techs trained at the METC work in pharmacies operated by the federal government and the military.

A group representing specialty pharmacies is calling on the Department of Defense to not use exclusive networks in the Tricare pharmacy program.

NEW YORK — A group representing specialty pharmacies is calling on the Department of Defense to not use exclusive networks in the Tricare pharmacy program.

The Independent Specialty Pharmacy Coalition said exclusive arrangements for the program, also known as TPharm, were anti-competitive and harmful to patients who rely on specialty care by reducing patient choice and disrupting the continuum of care for them, and that reductions in pharmaceutical costs would not necessarily reduce overall healthcare spending.
