The oral health zone solution: Fighting dental caries among at-risk kids

In July 2008, the Minnesota Department of Health began a two-year project aimed at addressing the rising oral healthcare crisis among at-risk children in the state. Funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration, or HRSA, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Oral Health Zone, or OHZ, project is a subproject of the state’s overall commitment to HRSA and CDC to develop for Minnesota a public oral health infrastructure.

In July 2008, the Minnesota Department of Health began a two-year project aimed at addressing the rising oral healthcare crisis among at-risk children in the state.

Soda may be as damaging to the teeth as some illegal drugs, according to a new study.

CHICAGO — Soda may be as damaging to the teeth as some illegal drugs, according to a new study.

The study, published in the March-April 2013 issue of the journal General Dentistry, found that drinking large quantities of carbonated soda that the study labeled "abusive" can be as harmful to dental health as methamphetamine and crack cocaine.

BELLEVUE, Wash. — OraHealth has introduced a new treatment for dry mouth, the company said.

The Bellevue, Wash.-based oral health products manufacturer described XyliMelts for Dry Mouth as all-natural, oral-adhering discs that coat and soothe the mouth. The disks time-release xylitol and oral lubricant day and night to reduce tooth decay.

The new Scrub Betweens is a soft scrubbing dental pick with thousands of microbristles. The micro toothbrush-like scrubbing tip glides between teeth, even in hard to reach back teeth, making it easier to remove food particles and reduce plaque build-up, which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

Research review: Vitamin D may prevent tooth decay

A new review of existing studies points toward a potential role for vitamin D in helping to prevent dental caries, or tooth decay.

SEATTLE — A new review of existing studies points toward a potential role for vitamin D in helping to prevent dental caries, or tooth decay. The review, published in the December issue of Nutrition Reviews, encompassed 24 controlled clinical trials, spanning the 1920s to the 1980s, on approximately 3,000 children in several countries. These trials showed that vitamin D was associated with an approximately 50% reduction in the incidence of tooth decay, the University of Washington announced Tuesday.
