Accenture's analysis also suggests that, in many cases, the problem is compounded by fragmented investment in narrow programs that are not well-coordinated and fully optimized.

Big data can seem overbearing to many as they try to ascertain how to mine actionable insights out of those reams of data, all while maintaining the speed to market that today's retail climate demands.

REDMOND, Wash. — Crossmark has launched a self-service data portal that it said would deliver business insights in real time to manufacturer and retail clients in the consumer goods industry.

The portal, which uses the Microsoft SQL Server Parallel Data Workhouse, provides sales and marketing channels with access to real-time market data, allowing them to analyze and take advantage of market trends faster than before, the company said.

The moves streamlines Kerr Health's information into a single platform for data analytics across multiple locations and lines of business.

The National Retail Federation described the 2011 holiday season as "average," projecting that holiday sales will rise 2.8% to $465.6 billion.

WASHINGTON — The National Retail Federation described the 2011 holiday season as "average," projecting that holiday sales will rise 2.8% to $465.6 billion.

While that growth is far lower than the 5.2% increase retailers experienced last year, it is slightly higher than the 10-year average holiday sales increase, according to Department of Commerce statistics.
