RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — A once-daily inhaler for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease has become available, the makers of the inhaler said Wednesday.

GlaxoSmithKline and Theravance announced the availability of Breo Ellipta (fluticasone furoate; vilanterol), for long-term maintenance treatment of airflow obstruction in patients with COPD, a term that encompasses chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The drug is not meant for treating acute bronchospasm or asthma, the companies said.

EUGENE, Ore. — Natural dietary supplement and OTC product maker Quantum Health has hired a new CEO, the company said.

Quantum Health announced that it had hired Jason Pellegrini, who previously served as VP sales for the grocery channel at MillerCoors. Pellegrini has also previously worked for LivePlanet, Viant, Mitchell Madison Group and ACNielsen. He started with Quantum Health in August.

NEW YORK — Safeway will take over prescriptions from an Oregon grocery store, according to published reports.

The Albany, Ore., Democrat-Herald reported that Safeway in Albany, Ore., would take over prescription files from Ray's Food Store in North Albany, starting on Thursday.

The owner of Ray's, C&K Market, said earlier this month that it would stop operating the pharmacy, which will close at 4 p.m. Pacific time Wednesday, and Ray's customers have been notified, the newspaper reported.

Teva announced the resignation of Jeremy Levin and that the board of directors had named EVP and CFO Eyal Desheh as interim president and CEO. Desheh has worked at Teva for more than 12 years, serving as CFO for the last five.

ARMONK, N.Y. — The University of Arizona College of Pharmacy is switching from a MacOS-based platform to an IBM system running Linux to manage growth of big data.

IBM said Wednesday that the Tucson, Ariz., college was using an IBM zEnterprise mainframe running the IBM DB2 database software on Linux to analyze and process 3 million medical claims per week. A business partner of IBM, Sirius Computer Solutions, helped the college move to the new system, which reduces the time it takes to process medical claims by 60%.

CINCINNATI — Vaccination of adolescents against whooping cough appears to result in fewer hospitalizations, according to a new study.

The study, conducted by researchers at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the University of Michigan and published in the journal Pediatrics, found that hospitalizations for whooping cough, also known as pertussis, were lower than would be expected if they had not been inoculated.

DUBLIN — Actavis had sales of $2.01 billion in third quarter 2013, a 57% increase over the same period last year, the drug maker said Tuesday.

Profits for the quarter were $65.5 million, down from $76.7 million in third quarter 2012. The quarter's results exclude figures from Ireland-based Warner Chilcott, which Actavis acquired at the beginning of the month.

DUBLIN — Actavis hopes to become the first company to market a generic version of a drug used to treat acne in adolescents and adults, the company said.

The drug maker announced that it had filed a regulatory approval application with the Food and Drug Administration for a generic version of Acanya (clindamycin phosphate; benzoyl peroxide) gel in the 1.2%/2.5% strength. Acanya is made by Valeant Pharmaceuticals International and Dow Pharmaceutical Sciences and is used to treat acne vulgaris in patients aged 12 and older.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug made by Lundbeck for treating a form of epilepsy in children, the drug maker said.

Lundbeck announced the approval of Sabril (vigabatrin) as an add-on therapy for refractory complex partial seizures in children ages 10 years and older who have not responded adequately to other treatments, as long as the benefit of treatment outweighs the risk of vision loss. The drug was already approved for treating the same condition in adults in 2009.
