The Food and Drug Administration has approved an HIV pill made by Gilead Sciences for patients who are switching from other therapy regimens, the company said.

FOSTER CITY, Calif. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved an HIV pill made by Gilead Sciences for patients who are switching from other therapy regimens, the company said.

Gilead said the FDA approved its single-pill regimen, Complera (emtricitabine; rilpivirine; tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) for use in adult patients who have suppressed their infections on stable antiretroviral regimens and are replacing their current regimens. The FDA originally approved the drug in 2011.

According to data from MasterCard Advisors SpendingPulse, sales of holiday-related categories, such as clothing, electronics and luxury goods, rose 2.3%, after rising 0.7% in 2012.

In his Krebs on Security blog, Brian Krebs identified a Ukrainian man as someone allegedly selling the credit and debit card data, though there was no evidence that the man was behind the theft itself.

DUBLIN — Drug maker Shire is extending the deadline for its offer to buy Exton, Pa.-based ViroPharma for $4.2 billion, Shire said Friday.

The company said it had extended the expiration date of its tender offer for ViroPharma until Jan. 9. The offer had previously been planned to expire on Thursday. Shire announced the $50-per-share offer last month.

The mixers are made with real fruit juices and are low in sugar content and calories. The product will officially launch in February.

The company’s founders first came up with the idea while attending a friend’s Bachelorette pool party. They loved the drinks that were being served and were surprised that they couldn't taste the alcohol content.

MONROVIA, Calif. — Regulators in Canada have given a maker of health kiosks the green light to start marketing its products there.

Stayhealthy said Health Canada's Medical Devices Bureau had granted it a license to sell its HealthCenter Kiosk, models 650 and 650-C. The kiosks measure blood pressure, heart rate, total body weight, body-mass index, total body composition and vision and can incorporate data on blood glucose.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — A national gay-rights organization has given Walgreens top marks for its practices related to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.

In its 2014 Corporate Equality Index, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation gave the Deerfield, Ill.-based retail pharmacy chain a "perfect" score of 100. 2014 is the ninth year that Walgreens has won a perfect score.

DUBLIN — The Food and Drug Administration declined to approve an experimental contraceptive patch developed by Actavis, the drug maker said Tuesday.

Actavis said the FDA sent it a complete response letter for its progestin-only transdermal contraceptive patch. A complete response letter means that the agency has finished reviewing a drug-approval application, but questions remain that preclude final approval.

Actavis said Warner Chilcott, now one of its subsidiaries, had filed with the FDA for approval of the ethinyl estradiol and etonogestrel vaginal ring in the 0.015-mg-per-day and 0.12-mg-per-day strengths. The device is a generic version of Merck's NuvaRing.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The philanthropic arm of supermarket operator Bi-Lo Holdings is donating more than $3 million to charities in the South, the company said.

The Bi-Lo Holdings Foundation said it would donate about $3.2 million to 281 non-profit organizations in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, particularly organizations focused on hunger, education, health, women and children. Bi-Lo Holdings operates the Bi-Lo and Winn-Dixie supermarket banners.

Publix made the donation to Food for All as part of its Sprinkle Joy campaign, announced earlier this month on its Facebook and Twitter pages, allowing users to make virtual holiday cookies; the filling of the cookie jar triggered donations to charitable organizations.
