Unilever is launching a new line of hair care products for men, the personal care company said Wednesday.

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J. — Unilever is launching a new line of hair care products for men, the personal care company said Wednesday.

Unilever said the Dove Men+Care shampoos and shampoo-conditioners would make men's hair three times stronger, based on the amount of breakage when compared with a nonconditioning shampoo. According to a 2010 AC Nielsen survey, 90% of men use shampoo in the shower, but only 5% use a shampoo designed for men's hair care needs.

Additionally, respondents ages 55-plus years are more likely than younger individuals to consult a doctor or pharmacist and read magazines for vitamin information.

WASHINGTON — Former surgeon general C. Everett Koop died Monday. He was 96.

Koop, who served as surgeon general from January 1982 to October 1989, was outspoken about the damaging health effects of smoking and also an early advocate of educating Americans about AIDS. In 1988, he released "Understanding AIDS," a U.S. Public Health Service brochure based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, which was sent to 107 million households.

MINNEAPOLIS — Upon the closing of Supervalu's sale of five pharmacy banners to Albertsons LLC, Dan Salemi will assume the role of president of pharmacy at the new Albertsons LLC, DSN has learned.

Salemi will succeed Supervalu president pharmacy operations Chris Dimos. Dimos will remain in his current role until the transaction closes. Supervalu has not named a pharmacy head for the 191 retail operations that will remain with Supervalu.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug for postmenopausal women who experience pain during sex.

The agency announced the approval of Shionogi's Osphena (ospemifene) for women with moderate to severe dyspareunia, a symptom of vulvar and vaginal atrophy due to menopause associated with declining levels of estrogen hormones.

PEAPACK, N.J. — Greenstone has launched an authorized generic version of a drug used to treat cholesterol.

Greenstone, the generics arm of Pfizer, announced the launch of authorized generic atorvastatin calcium tablets in the 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg and 80 mg strengths, in bottle sizes ranging from 90 to 1,000. The drug is a version of the parent company's cholesterol drug Lipitor.

An authorized generic is a brand marketed under its generic name at a reduced price.

The Michigan Health Information Network said that the Office of the National Coordinator for health information technology had commended it, recognizing that 94% of pharmacies in the state are equipped for e-prescribing.

NEW YORK — Drug maker Ranbaxy Labs has started producing the ingredients for a cholesterol drug while working with the Food and Drug Administration to fix manufacturing issues that led to the recall in November 2012 of several batches of the drug.

The Indian drug maker said it had initiated corrective and preventive actions, or CAPA, as it prepared to resume supplies of generic atorvastatin calcium tablets to the U.S. market. The drug is a generic version of Pfizer's Lipitor, and Ranbaxy became the first company to market a generic version in November 2011.

NEW YORK — A privately owned drug maker in New York is offering $6.5 billion for Irish drug maker Elan, but hasn't heard back from it, according to published reports.

The Associated Press reported that Royalty Pharma's $11-per-share offer for Elan represented a 4% premium over its closing price Friday. Royalty buys royalty interests in drug products that are in late-stage development or have already entered the market, but doesn't develop or market drugs of its own, the AP reported.

NEW YORK — A state Senate committee in Tennessee is looking into the possibility of allowing supermarkets to sell wine, according to published reports.

The Memphis, Tenn., Commercial Appeal reported that the proposed law would be subject to approval in local referendums.

Supporters of the bill cited convenience, while opponents — including liquor store owners — said it would be detrimental to public health, safety and the economy, criticizing the legislation as driven by "big national chains" and harmful to locally owned businesses.

Several pharmacy retailers got top place in a recent consumer satisfaction survey.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Several pharmacy retailers got top place in a recent consumer satisfaction survey.

A report released Tuesday by the American Customer Satisfaction Index ranked Rite Aid at the top among drug store chains, with a score of 77, a 3% improvement over last year. Walgreens gained 1%, for a score of 76, while CVS ranked 75, a 3% gain. The survey noted that CVS hit a low two years ago due to cost-cutting efforts.
