Costco announced on Thursday that its March sales increased 8% to $10.43 billion.

ISSAQUAH, Wash. — Costco announced on Thursday that its March sales increased 8% to $10.43 billion.

This year's five-week period, ended April 6, included 35 days of sales compared to 34 last year, reflecting the timing of Easter. This calendar shift positively impacted this year's net and comparable sales by an estimated 1 to 1.5%, the company stated.

During March, same-store sales rose 6% in the United States. For the total company, same-store sales increased 5% during that period.

Prescription drug trend grew 3.8% in 2013, driven by significant price inflation for traditional brand drugs, specialty drugs and generics, as well as an increase in utilization as members filled more prescriptions in the slowly improving economy, according to the findings of CVS Caremark’s annual "Insights" report released on Thursday.

Family Dollar Stores on Thursday reported that for the second quarter of fiscal year 2014 ended March 1, net sales totaled $2.7 billion, representing a decline of 6.1%.

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Family Dollar Stores on Thursday reported that for the second quarter of fiscal year 2014 ended March 1, net sales totaled $2.7 billion, representing a decline of 6.1%. Earnings per diluted share in the second quarter of fiscal 2014 were $0.80 as compared to $1.21 in the second quarter of fiscal 2013. 

Comparable store sales for the 13-week period decreased 3.8% as a result of decreased customer transactions, partially offset by an increase in the average customer transaction value.

Lupin announced that it received final approval from the Food and Drug Administration for pioglitazone tablets USP in 15-mg, 30-mg and 45-mg strengths.

MUMBAI and BALTIMORE — Lupin announced that it received final approval from the Food and Drug Administration for pioglitazone tablets USP in 15-mg, 30-mg and 45-mg strengths. The product is the generic version of Actos tablets from Takeda Pharmaceuticals.

The drug is used an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with Type 2 diabetes. Actos tablets had annual sales in the United States of approximately $236 million as of December 2013, according to IMS MAT data.

Rite Aid on Thursday announced it has acquired Houston-based RediClinic, one of the nation’s leading operators of retail clinics.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid on Thursday announced it has acquired Houston-based RediClinic, one of the nation’s leading operators of retail clinics. RediClinic currently operates 30 clinics in the greater Houston, Austin and San Antonio areas. Through the acquisition, RediClinic will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Rite Aid. 

Details of the transaction were not disclosed.
