WASHINGTON — Another bill to limit dispensing of biosimilars lost Monday, this time in Illinois.

The state's legislature voted not to advance S.B. 1934, supported by such biotech companies as Amgen and Genentech, which would slow patients' access to knock-off versions of biotech drugs by restricting pharmacists' ability to dispense them. Illinois is the 13th state to defeat such a bill; a similar bill died in Texas' state legislature last week.

Schnuck Markets is enhancing the security of its computer network, the Midwestern supermarket chain said.

ST. LOUIS — Schnuck Markets is enhancing the security of its computer network, the Midwestern supermarket chain said Monday.

Schnucks said the upgrades would not affect the operation of its stores, but that people sending emails to the company might experience delays.

The enhancement comes about two months after a cyberattack announced at the end of March in which the company's payment card system was compromised. The company reported finding computer codes that captured the magnetic stripe data on the backs of credit and debit cards.

NORTH CHICAGO, Ill. — A new, higher-dose formulation of a drug used to treat pancreatic disorders is now available, the drug's manufacturer said.

AbbVie announced the launch of the new formulation of Creon (pancrelipase) delayed-release capsules. The drug is used to treat exocrine pancreatic insufficiency due to cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, removal of the pancreas and other conditions. The new strength is the highest-dose pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy available in the United States, AbbVie said.

NEW YORK — Anthem Blue Cross patients with HIV can continue receiving their drugs through community specialty pharmacies under a settlement of a lawsuit filed against the healthcare company by an advocacy organization.

In mid-November, Anthem Blue Cross adopted a policy that would require specialty pharmacy patients in California, most of them HIV patients, to receive their drugs via mail order through CuraScript, pharmacy benefit manager Express Scripts' in-house specialty pharmacy, in order to receive coverage.

LISLE, Ill. — The Pharmacy Quality Alliance has given one of its top awards to pharmacy benefit manager Catamaran Corp., the PBM said Friday.

Catamaran announced that it received a 2013 PQA Quality Award recognizing its five-star rating on all PQA measures in the Part D Star Ratings program. The PQA's stated goal is to improve patient health by championing clear performance measures for medication management, and the recognition program for prescription drug plans recognizes Medicare plans that have demonstrated outstanding performance in medication-related quality.

POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — Fruth Pharmacy on Friday announced their commitment to replace medications containing pseudoephedrine, a nonprescription decongestant that can be used in the illicit manufacture of methamphetamine, with Nexafed, a PSE product formulated with Impede technology that disrupts the extraction and conversion of PSE to meth.

Currently, medications with 30 mg of PSE will be replaced with other mg amounts being replaced as soon as possible, the 27-store chain stated.
