Safeway on Tuesday named Al Duran to the role of president of the company's Denver division.

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway on Tuesday named Al Duran to the role of president of the company's Denver division. He replaces Scott Grimmett, who is leaving Safeway for an opportunity with a noncompeting food retailer, the company stated.

"Al's results-oriented leadership style and experience on both the retail and the marketing side of our business will serve him well in his new assignment," Safeway chairman, president and CEO Steve Burd said. "He is also a Colorado native and knows that market well."

"The consumption of nearly 1 g of omega-3s per day may improve the elasticity of the arteries, especially in individuals at high risk of heart disease," PUFA Newsletter editor Joyce Nettleton said. "Measurement of arterial stiffness is a powerful predictor of future heart events and the risk of dementia and death."

The line, MMA Elite Series powered by MusclePharm, includes pre-workout, recovery, vitamin, protein and fat-loss products. Such retailers as Walmart, Sam's Club and Walgreens are being targeted to distribute the supplements in third quarter 2011, MusclePharm said.

Many MusclePharm products currently are sold in GNC.

The brewing company said that Molson, the company's current vice chairman, has assumed the role of chairman, while Coors, its current chairman, has stepped in as vice chairman. DENVER A cholesterol-lowering drug made by Merck appears to reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes and cardiac death in patients with chronic kidney disease, according to results of a new study.

 

Merck said results of a 9,000-patient clinical study showed that Vytorin (ezetimibe and simvastatin) reduced the risks by 16.1% compared with placebo. Results of the study were presented Saturday at the annual meeting of the American Society of Nephrology.

Brian Goldner, president and CEO of Hasbro, joined Molson Coors' board, effective immediately. Goldner is the ninth independent director following a search to replace Pam Patsley, who stepped down as a director in December 2009. The Molson Coors board of directors is comprised of 14 directors.
