DENVER — The National Association of Chain Drug Stores' 2012 Pharmacy & Technology Conference, which kicked off on Saturday at the Colorado Convention Center in downtown Denver and runs through Tuesday night, will be the last.

But there's no need to break out the tissues because it's not going way. Instead, the retail pharmacy trade group is rolling the Pharmacy, Marketplace and Supply Chain & Logistics conferences into a single show starting next year.

ALEXANDRIA, Va.  — The National Association of Chain Drug Stores announced on Tuesday the donation of 9,500 lbs. of consumer goods to be dispersed to various charitable organizations throughout the Denver area, following the completion of the recent NACDS Marketplace Conference.

NACDS Marketplace exhibitors donated leftover products ranging from cosmetics, health and hygiene products, food and beverages and household supplies, to other consumer products available in retail pharmacies.

NEW YORK — Specialty pharmacy provider The Apothecary Shops has acquired a Denver-based pharmacy, according to published reports.

The Phoenix Business Journal reported Tuesday that the company had acquired Colorado Pharmacy, making it the company's 17th.

The newspaper also reported that The Apothecary Shops would would change its name to Avella Specialty Pharmacy and rebrand its stores in August, quoting VP operations Randle House as saying the plan was to bring several company names under one umbrella.

This will be the last time I walk an NACDS Marketplace floor. Ever. I’m done. Because next year, it will be the Total Store Expo, and I’m already getting a little jazzed about that. But that’s a year away, yet. For now, let me share some snippets around some of the products and suppliers I found interesting making my last walkthroughs on the Marketplace show floor. Ever.

Because next year, it will be the Total Store Expo, and I’m already getting a little jazzed about that. Here’s my thought process — is there an opportunity in sitting down with a retail pharmacy operation team along with an OTC buying team and exploring possible synergies between the two? Is there a value-add already built into this meeting?

This year's NACDS Marketplace Conference will take place June 23 to 26 in Denver.

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway on Tuesday named Al Duran to the role of president of the company's Denver division. He replaces Scott Grimmett, who is leaving Safeway for an opportunity with a noncompeting food retailer, the company stated.

"Al's results-oriented leadership style and experience on both the retail and the marketing side of our business will serve him well in his new assignment," Safeway chairman, president and CEO Steve Burd said. "He is also a Colorado native and knows that market well."
