Canada's Thanksgiving happened last month, and its major day of frenzied holiday shopping traditionally happens on Boxing Day, the day after Christmas, but Black Friday shopping has been making waves up there in recent years as well.

Target said it would be "pulling out all the stops" to offer customers at its Canadian stores deals for the holiday, opening stores at 7 a.m. and closing at 11 p.m., offering discounts on products like high-definition televisions, digital cameras, clothing and accessories, toys and kitchen appliances.

More than half of consumers plan to shop on Black Friday this year, although the number has decreased since last year. According to the Deloitte Pre-Thanksgiving Survey, 53% of 1,000 consumers polled will shop on Black Friday, compared to 63% in 2012.

Younger consumers are more likely to shop Black Friday, with 68% of weekend shoppers age 18-29 planning to shop that day and 44% of Black Friday shoppers in this age group planning to hit the stores between midnight and 5 a.m., compared to 30% of those 30 and older.

Supermarket chain Hy-Vee is donating 10,000 turkeys for Thanksgiving, the company said Wednesday.

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Supermarket chain Hy-Vee is donating 10,000 turkeys for Thanksgiving, the company said Wednesday.

The West Des Moines, Iowa-based chain said it would donate the turkeys over a 10-day period in 10 cities around the Midwest, including Lincoln, Neb.; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Sioux City, Iowa; Des Moines, Iowa; Mason City, Iowa; Rochester, Minn.; Omaha, Neb.; Sioux Falls, S.D.; Madison, Wis.; and the Kansas City, Mo., metro area and Quad Cities metro area in Iowa and Illinois.

NEW YORK — Consumers are holiday shopping sooner and spending more this year due to a late Thanksgiving and shorter holiday shopping season, according to a new survey by American Express.

The latest American Express Spending and Saving Tracker indicates that shoppers will spend $1,260 this year — up $400 from last year — and 27% are already looking for deals and plan to finish before Dec. 1, from 24% last year. Thirty-seven percent expect to finish shopping the week before Christmas, compared with 33% last year.

Simultaneously, the firms entered into a worldwide and exclusive licensing agreement to create, produce and distribute perfumes and cosmetics under the Oscar de la Renta brand. Terms were not disclosed.

The $704 million acquisition will give Cubist control of the drug tedizolid phosphate, an experimental drug that it said had the potential to treat resistant infections. Trius ceased to be traded on the NASDAQ earlier this week.
