PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. — The global prestige beauty market experienced mixed results in the first half of 2013 but the U.S. prestige beauty market posted an 8% gain during the first six months of the year, according to the NPD Group.

The U.S. prestige beauty industry generated $5 billion in the first six months of the year, an increase of 8%, the NPD Group stated. In Europe, the United Kingdom gained 6%, generating £803 million in prestige beauty sales, while France, Italy, and Spain continued to face challenges in this industry.

IRI reported that within U.S. multi-outlet locations, sales of lipstick rose nearly 12% for the 12 weeks ended June 16. During that same period, sales of lip gloss slipped 3.8%, and sales of lip treatments dropped 27%.

Beauty manufacturers are responding by developing lip color that promises to deliver not only intense color, but also more moisture and longer wear.

Beauty company Revlon announced that net sales were essentially flat during the second quarter due, in part, to continued softness in its Almay brand.

NEW YORK — Beauty company Revlon announced on Wednesday that net sales were essentially flat during the second quarter due, in part, to continued softness in its Almay brand.

During its conference call with analysts Wednesday morning, the company also announced that Bob Kretzman, chief administrative officer, will retire at the end of September, following a 25-year career at Revlon. Kretzman will join Revlon's board of directors, effective Oct. 1.

In North America, the Consumer Products division is making strategic breakthroughs with L'Oréal Paris Advanced Hair care, Olia hair colorant by Garnier and the ramp-up of Essie, the company stated.
