All of Target's stores in Canada have been certified for sustainability, the retailer said Thursday.

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario — All of Target's stores in Canada have been certified for sustainability, the retailer said Thursday.

Target said that all of the 68 stores it operates in Canada have been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED certification; most recently, 44 were certified. The company plans to have all 124 stores it is opening this year LEED-certified.

CANTON, Mass. — A new product is designed to make toilet paper mimic wet wipes while being easier to flush.

Fresh Dab, introduced by a company of the same name, is a gel applied to toilet paper, which the company said would allow for better removal of residue than toilet paper alone, while also allowing toilet paper to break down as it normally would, unlike wet wipes that can clog sewage and septic systems.

SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets on Tuesday announced it will open the Lehigh Valley’s first LEED-certified grocery store in Fogelsville, Pa. in December. 

The 65,800-sq.-ft. superstore also is the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)-certified location in the 162-store Weis Markets’ footprint. The Fogelsville location will feature a larger perishable department, including a produce department with a greater selection of organic produce, an in-store café where beer will be sold, and a full-service pharmacy.

Pet care will be one growth sector; Neilsen predicted pet owners will drive 5.9% dollar and 3.1% unit growth. The rest of home care, including cleaning and households products — even holiday wrapping paper — will see modest, price-driven dollar gains and unit sales declines, according to Nielsen.

Tim Gratto, DPS VP sustainability, said the sustainability requirements for LEED certification — which considers fuel conservation, energy use reduction and recycling and waste reduction, among other points — align closely with the company's overarching corporate social responsibility goals.

SALISBURY, N.C. — Food Lion announced that two of its stores in Fayetteville, N.C., have earned LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

The supermarket chain said the stores feature such environmentally friendly construction and energy-efficient services as an on-site recycling center, an educational kiosk and preferred parking for carpool vehicles.

CITY OF AMSTERDAM, N.Y. — Baby food brand Beech-Nut announced that its new facility has earned LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council and the Green Building Certification Institute.

SALISBURY, N.C. — Food Lion has opened its third store certified by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, in Hope Mills, N.C.

“By building our third LEED grocery store, we will reduce energy costs by more than 20% compared to a typical supermarket, as well as conserve 40% more water than other Food Lion stores,” said Kyle Mitchell, VP store development for Delhaize America South. “Food Lion has one of the most advanced retail energy conservation programs in the country.”

CINCINNATI — Procter & Gamble is working toward making its sites LEED-certified as part of the company's long-term sustainability commitment.

Established by the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED is the nation's preeminent program for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. All new P&G sites, including those in the United States, that currently are in the design phase or early construction are working toward achieving LEED certification, P&G said.
