PHILADELPHIA — GlaxoSmithKline expects to close the deal on the divestiture of several over-the-counter brands that were identified in April, the company stated Tuesday as part of its second-quarter earnings results.

"The divestment of noncore OTC assets in the [United States] and Europe will further aid our strategy to accelerate growth and increase the focus of our Consumer Healthcare business," GSK stated. "We are making progress to divest these products by late 2011, subject to realizing appropriate value for shareholders."

NEW YORK — In an effort to get adults to consume their daily serving of vegetables, Mott's has introduced a 100% juice blend.

New Mott's Garden Blend offers two servings of vegetables, as well as vitamins A and C, in each 8-fl.-oz. glass, the company said. The product is available in original and low sodium varieties.

Mott's Garden Blend is available for purchase at retailers nationwide.

WASHINGTON — Expect flat back-to-school sales this year as parents continue to be cautious with their spending, the National Retail Federation found in its latest survey.

In its back-to-school survey, conducted by BIGresearch, NRF found that consumers are purchasing more store-brand or generic items (39.9%), comparison shopping more online (29.8%) and shopping for sales (50%). Additionally, nearly half of survey respondents said the economy is forcing them to simply spend less in general (43.7%).

STAMFORD, Conn. — Purdue Pharma has launched a new website designed to combat abuse of prescription drugs, the company said Wednesday.

The website, RxSafetyMatters.org, is designed to help healthcare professionals, police and community organizations combat prescription drug diversion and abuse. Purdue is the developer of OxyContin (oxycodone), an extended-release painkiller that is frequently a target of drug abusers.

Stop & Shop said its Scan It! Mobile app allows customers to complete an entire shopping trip on their iPhone 3GS or 4G. As previously reported by Drug Store News, the app, developed in partnership with Modiv Media, allows customers to scan items with their phone's camera. Once the shopping is complete, the information is relayed to the checkout register, thus speeding up the checkout process.

The National Retail Federation said last week that it was disappointed in the final debit card swipe-fee regulations set by the Federal Reserve.

WASHINGTON — The National Retail Federation said last week that it was disappointed in the final debit card swipe-fee regulations set by the Federal Reserve.

Under the new rule, the current debit card swipe-fee rate of 1% to 2% of each transaction will be replaced with a flat fee of not more than 21 cents per transaction for the nation’s largest banks — substantially higher than the flat fee of up to 12 cents the Federal Reserve originally proposed in December 2010.

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. — As part of a strategic assessment, generic drug maker Par Pharmaceutical is set to restructure its branded division.

The company said last week that its restructuring of Strativa Pharmaceuticals will result in a reduced workforce, prompting one-time noncash charges in the second quarter in addition to severance costs, although Par said the restructuring will generate expense savings in the $8 to $12 million range for the remainder of the year.

NEW YORK — Pfizer defended a drug used for smoking cessation Monday following reports of a Canadian study that found it raised the risk of heart problems.

The 8,216-patient study of Chantix (varenicline), published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, found that of the 4,908 patients who received Chantix, 52 had an increased risk of serious heart problems, with similar risks appearing in 27-of-the-3,308 patients who took placebo.

NEW YORK — Innovation took center stage Thursday as Eli Lilly laid out its future growth strategies at a meeting with investors.

At its “Bridging to the Future” meeting, Lilly said it had 70 drugs in its research and development pipeline, including 33 in phases 2 and 3. The company said it expects at least 10 new drugs to enter phase 3 this year, including drugs in such areas as cancer, diabetes and neuroscience, as well as new therapeutic areas, such as autoimmune disorders.
