Medication nonadherence is common, but it may be reduced by lower drug costs and co-payments, as well as increased follow-up care, according to a study published earlier this week in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

New research presented at the World Congress Summit to Improve Adherence and Enhance Patient Engagement by researchers from the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, finds that the MedVantx MedStart Connect generic medication sampling program implemented in the primary care physicians' office, led to significantly increased patient initiation of new prescriptions as well as continued use of the medications, and could possibly lead to savings for health plans.

That’s what Aaron McKethan, SVP of strategy and business development for RxAnte, had to say in a Jan. 13 article on Forbes.com, “A digital health acquisition to watch.” The story focused largely on RxAnte’s recent acquisition by Millennium Laboratories in December — which the author described as a “little-known, private equity-backed urine drug testing company” — and the technology it uses to improve patient adherence.

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — New research conducted by CVS Caremark and Brigham and Women's Hospital identifies five key features of Value-Based Insurance Design plans that are associated with the greatest impact on medication adherence.

The study, which is published online Thursday in Health Affairs and also will appear in the journal's March issue, was funded by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Changes in Health Care Financing and Organization Initiative.

WASHINGTON — HIT policy needs to focus on specific goals for improving patient medication adherence in order to realize the goals of improving patient health and achieving cost savings in the U.S. healthcare system, according to an expert panel convened today by the Network for Excellence in Health Innovation and Prescriptions for a Healthy America.

In particular, the panel said the two highest priorities for HIT should be providing electronic access to accurate mediation lists and complete drug formulary information for prescribing physicians.

Specifically, NACDS urged CMS to adopt measures related to medication adherence and appropriate medication use as part of its Quality Rating System for Qualified Health Plans, which are offered through health insurance exchanges.

The National Community Pharmacists Association shared a proof of concept study that affirmed the value retail pharmacy can deliver in saving healthcare dollars. Patients who opted-in to medication synchronization programs offered through their community pharmacy averaged more than 100 additional days on therapy per year and were 30% more likely to take their medication as prescribed.

At a time when health systems and payers are actively seeking sound strategies to keep their patients from being readmitted to a hospital, pharmacy could very well be their panacea. Sticking to a prescribed drug therapy script does just that — it helps prevent re-hospitalizations, which will be a key metric with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. The community pharmacist also sees the patients more often than other healthcare practitioners and has as many opportunities to provide appropriate course correction, if necessary, around a particular medicinal regimen if it isn't working. And medication synchronization augments the pharmacists' ability to keep their patients on point.

HAIFA, Israel — Users of a medication-management app can now refill their prescriptions using an enhancement to it.

MediSafe announced Monday an updated version of its Medication Refill Reminder app allowing users to enter contact information for their preferred pharmacies and, once alerted that a medication refill is needed, to click on the pharmacy logo that directs them to the mobile refill page of the specified pharmacy. The app currently supports refills for Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid and Health Mart.
