NEW YORK — Costco has entered the pharmacy benefit management business, according to published reports.

In an article in the January 2013 issue of Costco Connection magazine, the club warehouse retailer is promoting the new PBM, Costco Health Solutions, to small business owners. Pharmaceutical industry consultant Adam Fein noted on his blog, Drug Channels, that Costco was seeking to emulate the tactics already used by CVS Caremark, Walgreens and Walmart to drive prescription growth.

NEW YORK — A new app allows people to share their STD statuses with potential partners.

Giffen Solutions announced the launch of MedXSafe, a new feature to its MedXCom Patient platform. The app allows people to bump phones with a potential partner and exchange contact information as well as their STD status. Giffen emphasized that users choose to share their information and that the app doesn't violate medical confidentiality laws, and only licensed healthcare providers can register to use the MedXCom system.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration is ordering the makers of several sleep drugs to lower the recommended dosage due to the risk that they can impair patients the morning after, the agency said Thursday.

The FDA announced that it was requiring the manufacturers of drugs containing the active ingredient zolpidem to lower the current recommended dosage in light of new data showing that the morning after use, the drug can remain in the blood in sufficient quantities to impair activities that require alertness, such as driving.

Ultimately, there’s no “retail pharmacy” without the “pharmacy,” and that’s true of any store that dispenses prescription drugs — whether it’s a small independent drug store, a nationwide chain, a supermarket or a mass merchandiser. But in many respects, Rite Aid is trying to make the “pharmacy” component of that phrase just a little bit bigger.

The video, part of RxPatrol, Purdue's broader initiative to combat pharmacy crime, launched on the initiative's website. Titled "RxPatrol Pharmacy Safety and Security," it is free of charge, and is part of the NCPA's Protect Your Pharmacy Now! initiative, which started in 2008.

 MAPLE GROVE, Minn. — Drug maker Upsher-Smith Labs has introduced a new product to its prenatal vitamin line, the company said Tuesday.

The drug maker announced the launch of Nexa Plus capsules, a once-daily, prescription vitamin that contains 350 mg of life's DHA, a plant-based and fish-free omega-3 fatty acid; 1.25 mg of folic acid; and 250 mcg of the B vitamin biotin.

JERUSALEM — Teva Pharmaceutical Industries announced the launch of an authorized generic of a Type 2 diabetes drug.

The company launched pioglitazone hydrochloride tablets in the 15-mg, 30-mg and 45-mg strengths. The drug is a generic version of Takeda Pharmaceuticals' Actos.

Annual sales of Actos in the United States were approximately $2.7 billion for the 12-month period ended in June, according to IMS sales data.
