PARSIPPANY, N.J. — Drug maker Actavis is challenging the patent for a drug used to treat testosterone deficiency or absence in men, the company said.

Actavis, formerly known as Watson Pharmaceuticals, said it had filed a regulatory approval application with the Food and Drug Administration for a generic version of Endo Pharmaceuticals' Fortesta (testosterone) gel in the 10 mg-per-0.5 g strength.

PHOENIX — The Arizona Corporate Excellence Awards has named Avella Specialty Pharmacy as the fastest-growing private company based in the state, Avella said.

Avella, formerly known as The Apothecary Shops, received the award from the Phoenix Business Journal. The ACE Awards recognize private companies based on the growth of their business, innovation, community involvement, dedication to employees and leadership accomplishments. The company changed its name to Avella in July.

PITTSBURGH — A unit of generic drug maker Mylan has settled with Sunovion Pharmaceuticals over a drug used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma.

Mylan announced Tuesday that it had reached a settlement in a patent litigation suit that Sunovion, which used to operate under the name Sepracor, had filed against Dey Pharma, now known as Mylan Specialty, concerning the drug Xopenex (levalbuterol hydrochloride).

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy, a national professional association of pharmacists and healthcare practitioners, on Wednesday announced the appointment of Edith Rosato as CEO.

Rosato will take over from long-time CEO Judith Cahill, who announced her plans to retire earlier this year.

In her new role as CEO, Rosato will be responsible for all program, financial and operational aspects of the academy, including a $10 million budget and staff of nearly 40. She will start her position in November.
