A drug under development by Forest Labs and Pierre Fabre has been shown to reduce symptoms of major depressive disorder, the companies said.

SUPPLIER NEWS — A drug under development by Forest Labs and Pierre Fabre has been shown to reduce symptoms of major depressive disorder, the companies said. New York-based Forest and Paris-based Pierre Fabre announced results of a phase-3 trial of levomilnacipran, saying the drug showed reductions in symptoms as early as one week after treatment was started. The companies expect results of another phase-3 trial of the drug this spring.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Pharmaceutical wholesaler H.D. Smith has appointed Bill Williams as CFO, the company said Wednesday.

Williams, who has worked at such companies as Kraft Foods, Allied Signal and Martin Brower Co., most recently worked as a partner in Tatum LLC's Chicago office.

Cornell will be responsible for Frito-Lay North America, Quaker Foods & Snacks North America, PepsiCo Mexico, South America Foods, PepsiCo customer teams and all of PepsiCo’s Power of One activities within the Americas.

Longhorne, Pa.-based Scrips America launched a new children's fever reducer at the ECRM Cough & Cold and Allergy EPPS called Children's RapiMed.

LAS VEGAS — Longhorne, Pa.-based Scrips America launched a new children's fever reducer at the ECRM Cough & Cold and Allergy EPPS last week called Children's RapiMed.

The new product, shipping in June, features a single-ingredient (acetaminophen) small rapid-melt tablet in both bubblegum and grape flavors. The product will be available in two strengths — an 80-mg acetaminophen for children between the ages of 2 years and 6 years and a 160-mg acetaminophen for children between the ages of 6 years and 11 years.

Specifically in the cough-cold space, Greenwich, Conn.-based Homeostasis fields three adult cough-cold products — allergy, cough and cold, and flu, along with one pediatric product: children's Homeostasis cough and cold.

According to company officials, the brand had been successfully test marketed across one major retailer and will be fully available beginning in April.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — General merchandise retailers Shopko and Pamida have completed their merger that will create a $3 billion company that serves largely rural communities in 22 states.

The combined entity will retain the Shopko name. Shopko will be headquartered in Green Bay and Pamida’s corporate headquarters in Omaha, Neb., will be consolidated into the Green Bay office over the next several months.

Procter & Gamble unveiled a larger than expected cost-savings program that involves cutting a total of 5,700 nonmanufacturing jobs in an effort to trim costs by the end of fiscal 2016, said P&G CEO Bob McDonald during the company’s annual Consumer Analyst Group of New York conference in Boca Raton, Fla.

CINCINNATI — Procter & Gamble unveiled a larger than expected cost-savings program that involves cutting a total of 5,700 nonmanufacturing jobs in an effort to trim costs by the end of fiscal 2016, said P&G CEO Bob McDonald during the company’s annual Consumer Analyst Group of New York conference in Boca Raton, Fla.

According to published reports, the cuts represent about 10% of P&G’s nonmanufacturing jobs. P&G has about 57,000 nonmanufacturing employees among its total workforce of about 129,000.

Generic drug maker Par Pharmaceutical has completed its acquisition of an Indian drug company, Par said.

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. — Generic drug maker Par Pharmaceutical has completed its acquisition of an Indian drug company, Par said.

Par announced that it had completed its $20.5 million acquisition of Chennai, India-based Edict Pharmaceuticals.

Edict specializes in oral solid drugs and currently has 11 regulatory approval applications under review at the Food and Drug Administration.

A specialty pharmacy provider has begun selling a drug made by Pfizer for treating kidney cancer.

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. — A specialty pharmacy provider has begun selling a drug made by Pfizer for treating kidney cancer.

The company announced that it had launched Inlyta (axitinib), which the Food and Drug Administration approved last month for treating renal cell carcinoma in patients with advanced disease for whom first-line systemic therapy has failed. According to the American Cancer Society, 60,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with the disease each year, and 13,000 die.

PITTSBURGH — Mylan is changing the name of its branded specialty pharmaceutical business, the company said Wednesday.

The drug maker announced that it would change the name of Dey Pharma to Mylan Specialty. Dey makes treatments for respiratory diseases, psychiatric disorders and severe allergic reactions, including the EpiPen (epinephrine).
