ABBOTT PARK, Ill. — Abbott recently launched Perfectly Simple by ZonePerfect, a line extension that is gluten-free and features fewer ingredients in each bar (between six and 10 ingredients).

Shipping in April, Perfectly Simple by ZonePerfect is available in three flavors: peanut crunch, cranberry almond and toasted coconut. The nutrition bars contain 10 g of protein, with no preservatives or added coloring. Each bar contains between 170 and 200 calories.

PALM BEACH, Fla. — The National Association of Chain Drug Stores has elected new officers for the coming year.

For the 2012-2013 term, NACDS chairman Bob Loeffler, who also serves as chief administrative officer of H-E-B, will be succeeded by Walgreens president and CEO Greg Wasson. Thrifty White Pharmacy president and CEO Bob Narveson was elected as vice chairman, while Rite Aid president and CEO John Standley was appointed as treasurer, as well as a member of NACDS' executive committee. Wasson, Narveson and Standley will serve one-year terms.

PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Drug Store News Group on Sunday co-hosted a breakfast with CVS Caremark to celebrate DSN’s March 12 “Category of One” issue. Larry Merlo, CVS Caremark president and CEO, shared with attendees CVS’ focus on leveraging personalization opportunities, through both marketing and assortment, to engender loyalty. Suppliers also were introduced to new CVS/pharmacy president Mark Cosby.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Walmart announced that Google's VP local and maps Marissa Mayer will be up for election to the board at the company's annual shareholders' meeting on June 1. If elected, Mayer would become the 16th member of the board.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Biotech manufacturer Amgen will acquire the private South San Francisco, Calif.-based drug developer Kai Pharmaceuticals for $315 million, the companies said Tuesday.

The deal includes the acquisition of KAI-4169, an experimental drug Kai is developing for secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients with chronic kidney disease who are on dialysis. Amgen has provided a loan to fund phase-3 clinical studies of the drug and will acquire rights to it worldwide, except for Japan.
