Martin's Food Markets, part of the Ahold USA's Giant-Carlisle chain, announced it had partnered with the Richmond City Health District and Greater Richmond Fit4Kids in launching "Healthy Ideas" checkout lanes at the stores. Items will include fruit, nuts, snack packs from the store's Nature's Promise natural and organic section, nutrition bars and 100% fruit juice.

MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu on Monday announced Robert Bly will join the company as president of Shoppers, a 56-store division in the Baltimore/Washington, D.C., market.

Bly is expected to begin his new role on Aug. 22 and will report to Chuck Elias, SVP retail operations. Bly replaces Tim Lowe, who recently accepted a new leadership role in Supervalu's merchandising organization.

CHICAGO — A former CVS executive has been appointed to a top position at a company that provides pharmacy services to the long-term care industry.

Millennium Pharmacy Systems announced the appointment of A. James Newell as SVP operations. Newell started the new position Monday.

Most recently, Newell was the founder and CEO of the Newell Group and was COO of Quality Partners of Rhode Island, a Medicare quality-improvement organization. He previously served as director of pharmacy programs at CVS.

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries will take Taro Pharmaceutical Industries private, under a merger agreement between the two companies announced Sunday.

MUMBAI, India — Sun Pharmaceutical Industries will take Taro Pharmaceutical Industries private, under a merger agreement between the two companies announced Sunday.

Sun, based in India, has sought to buy Israel-based Taro since 2007 and owns about 77.5% of the latter's shares.

After the merger is complete, Taro will become a privately held company and wholly owned subsidiary of Sun. Taro shareholders will receive $39.50 per share.

ELMSFORD, N.Y. — BioScrip on Wednesday posted $155.9 million in second-quarter revenue, up 18.5% compared with the prior year.

"The second-quarter results demonstrate our progress in executing on our strategic plan," BioScrip president and CEO Rick Smith said. "We were able to close on the divestiture of the noncore pharmacy services assets and redeploy a portion of the proceeds towards the acquisition of InfuScience, while delivering sequential improvement on our adjusted EBITDA."

Bristol-Myers Squibb has bought a majority stake in drug maker Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Bristol said Wednesday.

NEW YORK — Bristol-Myers Squibb has bought a majority stake in drug maker Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Bristol said Wednesday.

The New York-based drug maker said that 140.5 million shares of Amylin had been put up for sale at $31 per share, and that it now owned 85.55% of the San Diego-based company. Bristol said it planned to acquire the rest of Amylin's shares Wednesday as well.

DUBLIN, Ohio — Healthcare company Cardinal Health is donating almost $1 million to university pharmacy programs across the country.

Cardinal, based in Dublin, Ohio, said the donations were part of the Cardinal Health Pharmacy Scholarship Program, which it launched in June 2011 and which has donated more than $2.1 million to 20 universities.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Shopko announced that a former JCPenney executive has joined the company.

Shopko said Craig Gourley will serve as its new SVP and general merchandise manager of home and hardlines. Gourley will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of merchandising for the home division, including developing strategies, negotiation of vendor partnerships and managing the buying team. He will report to EVP and chief merchandising officer Jill Soltau.

WASHINGTON — The American Pharmacists Association has a new president-elect, the group said Thursday.

The APhA announced the election of Matthew Osterhaus, who will succeed Steven Simenson at the conclusion of the 2014 APhA Annual Meeting and Exposition in Orlando, Fla., on March 31, 2014. Osterhaus is the co-owner of Osterhaus Pharmacy in Maquoketa, Iowa, and an APhA trustee.

Blu, based in Franklin, Ky., said Dombrowski will be responsible for strategic planning and business development, including mergers and acquisitions. Blu was founded in 2006.

Dombrowski previously worked as senior director for strategic planning and business development for Kremers Urban Pharmaceuticals.

A subsidiary of Par Pharmaceutical Cos. acquired earlier this year has received its first Food and Drug Administration approval.

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. — A subsidiary of Par Pharmaceutical Cos. acquired earlier this year has received its first Food and Drug Administration approval.

Par said Par Formulations received approval from the FDA for labetalol hydrochloride tablets in the 100-mg, 200-mg and 300-mg strengths. The drug, a generic version of Prometheus Labs' Trandate, is used to treat hypertension.

Par acquired Par Formulations, formerly the Chennai, India-based drug maker Edict Pharmaceuticals, in February 2012.

CARLISLE, Pa. — A Giant-Carlisle store in Pennsylvania will sponsor an event to teach kids about healthy eating.

Giant Food Stores, the Ahold USA-owned chain based in Carlisle, Pa., said it would sponsor the "Kid Healthy Ideas Nutrition Express" on Friday morning and again on the morning of Aug. 22 at a store in Camp Hill, Pa.

An in-store nutritionist will teach kids how to make snack mix, breakfasts and healthy desserts, as well as teach them about the dangers of sugary drinks.

CINCINNATI — Specialty pharmacy provider BioRx has acquired another specialty pharmacy provider based in Minnesota, BioRx said Monday.

BioRx, based in Cincinnati and specializing in such bleeding disorders as hemophilia, announced the purchase of Savage, Minn.-based Coagulife, which provides similar services.
