NEW YORK — Food Lion president Cathy Green Burns has left the company and is being succeeded by Beth Newlands Campbell as part of a major organizational shakeup at Delhaize America, according to published reports.

The shakeup comes on the heels of the Oct. 15 appointment of Roland Smith as president and CEO of Delhaize America and EVP of Delhaize Group. Smith, former president and CEO of The Wendy’s Co., replaced Ronald Hodge, who had been with the company for 33 years. Delhaize America is a division of Brussels-based Delhaize Group.

The overwhelming majority of retailers offer some kind of service for mobile shoppers, with Walgreens named among those leading the way, according to a new study.

CHICAGO — The overwhelming majority of retailers offer some kind of service for mobile shoppers, and one national retail pharmacy chain was named among those leading the way, according to a new study.

Digital marketing and e-commerce company Acquity Group released results of a report showing that 82% of retailers have a mobile-optimized site, 72% have a mobile or tablet app, and 66% have both. Most of them, 88%, use basic mobile capabilities like shopping carts, while 85% use featured products, 63% use customer reviews, and 54% use contact forms.

Walgreens last month acquired UCH Pharmaceutical Services, an independent retail pharmacy based in Indiana, the company that helped broker the deal announced Wednesday.

ADDISON, Texas — Walgreens last month acquired UCH Pharmaceutical Services, an independent retail pharmacy based in Indiana, the company that helped broker the deal announced Wednesday. 

UCH is an independent retail pharmacy that provided specialty compounding services throughout Grant County, Ind. 

The Transition Companies acted as UCH’s sole M&A advisor for this transaction, which closed in November 2012.

MINNEAPOLIS — Nash Finch, a Minneapolis-based food distributor, has announced that Kevin Elliott has been appointed EVP, president and COO of Nash Finch Wholesale/Retail.

Elliott previously served as SVP of merchandising, logistics and marketing at 7-Eleven. Elliott worked at 7-Eleven from 2001 to 2010, where he was responsible for overseeing the corporate store and franchise operations as well as 7-Eleven’s national distribution network comprised of 26 distribution centers.

Supermarket chain Giant Food of Landover, Md., donated $25,000 to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation to support children in need across the Mid-Atlantic region this week, the Ahold-owned chain said.

LANDOVER, Md. — Supermarket chain Giant Food of Landover, Md., donated $25,000 to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation to support children in need across the Mid-Atlantic region this week, the Ahold-owned chain said.

Giant, also known as Giant-Landover to distinguish it from Giant Food Stores of Carlisle, Pa. — also owned by Ahold — said it would collect toys at all of its 170 stores during the holiday season.

Giant-Landover operates stores in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia.

L’Oréal has signed an agreement with Castanea Partners to acquire the fashion-forward, edgy beauty brand Urban Decay.

NEWTON, Mass. — L’Oréal has signed an agreement with Castanea Partners to acquire the fashion-forward, edgy beauty brand Urban Decay.

Terms of the deal, which is expected to close by the end of the year, were not disclosed. In the fiscal year ended in June 2012, Urban Decay, which is sold in such beauty retailers as Ulta and Sephora, recorded net sales of $130 million.

In the United States, Urban Decay will report to Carol Hamilton, president of L'Oréal Luxe USA.

PRINCETON, N.J. — Ranbaxy Labs has launched a new treatment for acne under a licensing agreement with a Canadian drug maker.

Ranbaxy announced Monday the launch of Absorbica (isotretinoin) capsules for treating severe recalcitrant nodular acne in patients ages 12 years and older. The drug was launched under a license from Mississauga, Ontario-based Cipher Pharmaceuticals.

Normally, oral isotretinoin must be taken with a high-fat meal due to its chemical properties, but Absorbica is designed to be taken without food.

AMSTERDAM, the Netherlands — Royal Ahold has appointed a new COO for its U.S. subsidiary, the company said Thursday.

Ahold, based in the Netherlands, announced that it had appointed James McCann as COO of Ahold USA, effective Jan. 1, 2013, replacing Carl Schlicker, who has announced his retirement. McCann, a 43-year-old native of the United Kingdom and currently Ahold's chief commercial and development officer who will continue as a member of the company's corporate board, began working for Ahold in 2011.

NEW YORK — Liquor can cost $2 more at liquor stores in states where the government has a monopoly on sales than at privately owned stores, according to a new study.

Researchers at Boston University School of Public Health, the Boston Medical Center and Johns Hopkins University analyzed the prices of 74 different alcohol brands in 13 "control states" — states where the government has a monopoly on liquor sales — and at 50 private retailers in "license states." The study appeared online in the journal Addiction.

The Abbott Fund grants will be provided to long-standing relief organization partners, including the American Red Cross, AmeriCares, Direct Relief International and World Vets. 

Abbott product donations have been made to Direct Relief International and Feeding America.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Drug wholesaler H.D. Smith has finalized its purchase of a wholesale company based in California.

H.D. Smith said Friday that it had completed its acquisition of Stockton, Calif.-based Valley Wholesale Drug, which it will run as a wholly owned subsidiary. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but day-to-day operations at Valley will be run by its CEO, Stephen Shoneff.
