The Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug that it called the first single-pill combination treatment for Type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug that it called the first single-pill combination treatment for Type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol.

The FDA approved Merck's Juvisync (sitagliptin and simvastatin), manufactured by Merck subsidiary MSD International GmbH Clonmel Co., based in Tipperary, Ireland. Merck operates under the name MSD outside the United States and Canada in order to avoid confusion with Germany-based Merck KGaA.

Bilbrey said that Bert Alfonso has been named EVP, CFO and chief administrative officer; Michele Buck has been named SVP and chief growth officer; and Mike Wege has been named SVP and chief commercial officer. The executives joined Hershey in 2006, 2005 and 2002, respectively.

Ahold has announced the appointment of Jeff Carr as EVP and CFO, starting Nov. 12.

AMSTERDAM — Ahold has announced the appointment of Jeff Carr as EVP and CFO, starting Nov. 12.

Carr will be a member of Ahold’s corporate executive board, pending shareholder approval. He will succeed Kimberly Ross, who is leaving Ahold in November to become CFO of Avon.

Carr will be responsible for Ahold’s finance, real estate and IT functions. He will also manage the company’s existing €350 million cost reduction program and explore further ways to reduce costs and simplify the business.

EXECUTIVE NEWS — The Generic Pharmaceutical Association has named Ralph Neas as its new president and CEO. Neas, currently president and CEO of the National Coalition on Health Care, replaces Kathleen Jaeger, who stepped down as president and CEO of GPhA in May 2010 after eight years with the organization. The GPhA said it planned to spend September introducing Neas to stakeholders in a broad outreach effort.

PHOENIX — Healthcare information provider Wolters Kluwer Pharma has appointed Henry Prolog as its VP data strategy, acquisitions and services, the company said.

The company said Prolog brought more than 25 years of sales, data contracts and marketing experience in the healthcare, technology and information services industries. Before Wolters Kluwer, Prolog worked for IMS Health, Siemens Medical, Fresenius USA and Verispan. Most recently, he was national director for channels at US Oncology in Houston.

Bristol-Myers Squibb has completed its previously announced acquisition of another drug maker.

NEW YORK — Bristol-Myers Squibb has completed its previously announced acquisition of another drug maker.

Bristol said it has completed the acquisition of small-molecule pharmaceutical company Amira Pharmaceuticals, based in San Diego, for $325 million. Amira's portfolio focuses on the discovery and early development of new drugs to treat inflammatory and fibrotic diseases.

The transaction was originally announced on July 21.

COVINGTON, Ky. — Pharmaceutical services provider Omnicare is taking its bid to buy PharMerica hostile.

PharMerica, a Louisville, Ky.-based company that distributes drugs to long-term care centers, turned down Omnicare's offer last month, saying it undervalued the company. Omnicare, a Covington, Ky.-based company that also distributes drugs to long-term care centers and nursing homes, had offered $716 million, or $15 per share, which it said represented a 37.2% premium over PharMerica's closing stock price on Aug. 22.

Citing Japan's Nikkei daily, Reuters reported that Gurgaon, India-based Ranbaxy would launch a generic version of Pfizer's cholesterol medication Lipitor (atorvastatin) at the end of November.

Tom Thumb, a wholly owned subsidiary of Kroger, on Friday announced its purchase of seven convenience stores in the Memphis area currently operated by Schnuck Markets.

MEMPHIS — The Memphis-based Kroger Delta Division, a division of Kroger on Friday announced its purchase of eight Memphis-area Schnucks stores. In addition, Kroger has acquired seven convenience stores that will be remodeled under the Kwik Shop banner and will be operated by Tom Thumb, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kroger. The Schnucks grocery stores will be converted and re-opened under the Kroger name over the next few weeks.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved a treatment for dermatitis made by Perrigo under a collaboration with Chicago-based Cobrek Pharmaceutical.

ALLEGAN, Mich. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a treatment for dermatitis made by Perrigo under a collaboration with Chicago-based Cobrek Pharmaceutical.

The drug maker said Tuesday that the FDA approved ketoconazole foam in the 2% strength. The drug is a generic version of Stiefel Labs' Extina, a topical drug used to treat seborrheic dermatitis in patients ages 12 years and older with healthy immune systems.

Extina has annual sales of about $10 million, according to Perrigo.

The final outcome of the battle between Israel’s Teva Pharmaceutical Industries and Canada’s Valeant Pharmaceuticals International to buy Cephalon serves as a good illustration of why it helps to have a plan B.


In May, Teva beat out Valeant’s $5.7 billion offer to buy Frazier, Pa.-based Cephalon with a $6.8 billion offer of its own, acquiring Cephalon’s hefty pipeline in the process. And last month, Teva bought Taiyo Pharmaceutical Industry, Japan’s third-largest generics company, for $934 million.
