Drug maker Shire is extending the deadline for its offer to buy Exton, Pa.-based ViroPharma for $4.2 billion, Shire said Friday.

DUBLIN — Drug maker Shire is extending the deadline for its offer to buy Exton, Pa.-based ViroPharma for $4.2 billion, Shire said Friday.

The company said it had extended the expiration date of its tender offer for ViroPharma until Jan. 9. The offer had previously been planned to expire on Thursday. Shire announced the $50-per-share offer last month.

Lancaster Soft Cremes will be available in three flavors — caramel, vanilla and caramel, and vanilla and raspberry — in 8-oz. bags for $3.99 and 4-oz. bags that retail for $2.49.

CARLISLE, Pa. – Ahold USA division Giant Food Stores has donated nearly $650,000 to local charities, the supermarket banner said.

Giant, based in Carlisle, Pa., and also known as Giant-Carlisle to distinguish itself from another Ahold banner, Giant Food of Landover, Md., said customers at Giant Food Stores and Martin's Food Markets — part of the same banner — donated $640,194 to local Children's Miracle Network hospitals in their communities as part of a donation campaign that took place between Nov. 24 and Dec. 7.

The long-standing partnership between Rite Aid and nutritional products retailer GNC is being extended through the end of the decade.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — The long-standing partnership between Rite Aid and nutritional products retailer GNC is being extended through the end of the decade, Rite Aid said Thursday.

Rite Aid said the partnership, which started in 1998, has been extended through 2019. The extension allows Rite Aid to add at least 300 GNC LiveWell store-within-a-store locations over the next five years. Currently, there are more than 2,200 such locations throughout the Rite Aid chain.

After more than 46 years of service, Publix Super Markets Miami division VP Bill Fauerbach has announced his decision to retire at the end of March 2014.

LAKELAND, Fla. — After more than 46 years of service, Publix Super Markets Miami division VP Bill Fauerbach has announced his decision to retire at the end of March 2014.

“Bill helped grow our culture and build a solid foundation on which the Miami division will continue to grow. We thank him for his many contributions, and he will be missed by us all,” said Publix CEO Ed Crenshaw.

With this retirement, Publix announced the promotion of Kevin Murphy to Miami division VP, effective April 1.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Shopko is opening two small-format stores in the Midwest, the chain said Thursday.

The company said it would open Shopko Hometown stores in Mayville, Wis., and Valentine, Neb., in spring 2014. The Shopko Hometown format is designed to serve smaller communities than the chain's larger store model and combines retail health services with an assortment of general merchandise, consumables and others.

A philanthropic arm of mass merchandiser Shopko is planning to donate up to $360,000 to school districts across the country.

NEW YORK — A philanthropic arm of mass merchandiser Shopko is planning to donate up to $360,000 to school districts across the country.

The Shopko Hometown Foundation, part of the Shopko Hometown division, which runs 181 small-format stores across the country, said it would donate $1 for each signature it receives from customers, for up to $2,000 per store.

The campaign, called Help Us Give Back, lasts through Dec. 24. Customers can sign their names once per day, every day through the campaign.

CVS Caremark’s MinuteClinic has expanded to its 28th state with the opening of clinic locations inside select CVS/pharmacy stores in New Hampshire, and the clinic operator also has formed a new clinical collaboration with Dartmouth-Hitchcock, the largest healthcare system in New Hampshire.

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS Caremark’s MinuteClinic has expanded to its 28th state with the opening of clinic locations inside select CVS/pharmacy stores in New Hampshire, and the clinic operator also has formed a new clinical collaboration with Dartmouth-Hitchcock, the largest healthcare system in New Hampshire.

Clinics are now open in Concord and West Lebanon. A Salem clinic will open Dec. 11, and locations in Hampton, Manchester and Nashua will open in early January, the company stated.

NEW YORK — Forest Labs is spending at least $240 million to buy rights to a psychiatric drug made by Merck, the New York-based drug maker said.

Forest said it would buy the U.S. rights for Merck's Saphris (asenapine), a tablet dissolved under the tongue for the treatment of schizophrenia and manic episodes in patients with bipolar disorder. Forest will pay Merck $240 million upfront, as well as milestone payments based on sales, while Merck will supply the drug. Forest will market the drug and conduct clinical studies.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid has appointed healthcare executive Myrtle Potter to its board of directors, the retail pharmacy chain said Tuesday.

Potter is currently CEO of Myrtle Potter & Co., a Silicon Valley-based consulting firm focused on life sciences and health care, as well as the head of consumer healthcare content company Myrtle Potter Media. She previous served as president of commercial operations and COO at Genentech and has worked at companies like Bristol-Myers Squibb and Merck.

OSAKA, Japan — Takeda Pharmaceutical Co., the largest drug maker in Japan, has hired the head of GlaxoSmithKline's vaccines division as its COO, Takeda said.

Christophe Weber was elected at the drug maker's board of directors meeting to become COO and candidate as the next CEO. Current president and CEO Yasuchika Hasegawa is expected to be named chairman and CEO.

Weber is currently president and general manager of GSK Vaccines, CEO of GSK Biologicals in Belgium and a member of GSK's global corporate executive team.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — At the request of the Food and Drug Administration, U.S. Marshals seized dietary supplements manufactured and held by Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals, located in Norcross, Ga., after FDA investigators found the products contained 1, 3-Dimethylamylamine HCl (DMAA) or its chemical equivalent, the agency announced Monday.

“This company has a responsibility to ensure its products are safe for distribution and human consumption,” stated Melinda Plaisier, the FDA’s associate commissioner for regulatory affairs. “We have taken action to protect consumers and demonstrate our commitment to their safety by keeping these products from entering the distribution system.”

The retail value of the seized products is more than $2 million, the agency estimated.

A complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia alleged that the products were adulterated according to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act because they contain DMAA, an unapproved food additive that is deemed unsafe under the law.

The FDA is urging consumers not to buy or use supplements containing DMAA, which can elevate blood pressure and could lead to cardiovascular problems, including heart attack, shortness of breath and tightening of the chest. Given the known biological activity of DMAA, the ingredient may be particularly dangerous when used with caffeine. Consumers should check labels and avoid any dietary supplements containing DMAA, which is referred to on different product labels by 10 possible names. The FDA has warned consumers about the health risks of DMAA on its web site.

On Nov. 12, 2013, U.S. Marshals seized more than 1,500 cases of finished goods and more than 1,200 pounds of in-process/raw material goods from the Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals facility.

During the FDA’s inspection of Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals, which began in October, investigators identified 11 products that were labeled as containing DMAA or its chemical equivalent. These products included Black Widow, ECA Xtreme, Fastin, Fastin-XR, Lipodrene, Lipodrene Hardcore, Lipodrene XR, Lipodrene Xtreme, Lipotherm, Stimerex-ES, and Yellow Scorpion. The investigators also observed bulk DMAA raw ingredients at the facility. Prior to the seizure, on Nov. 1, 2013, the FDA issued an administrative detention, temporarily holding the products until they were seized.

Dietary supplements containing DMAA are illegal and the FDA is using all available tools at its disposal to remove these products from the market. In 2012, the FDA issued warning letters to companies notifying them that products containing DMAA need to be taken off the market or reformulated to remove this substance.

Some members of club retailer Costco can have their items delivered to their homes under a new partnership between the retailer and Google.

NEW YORK — Some members of club retailer Costco can have their items delivered to their homes under a new partnership between the retailer and Google, the Internet company said.

Google Shopping Express is partnering with Costco to offer the service to members in the San Francisco area. Customers can order items online or through their mobile devices.

The delivery service also has partnerships with such retailers as Target, Whole Foods Market and L'Occitane.
