MORRISTOWN, N.J. — A generic painkiller made by Watson Pharmaceuticals infringes a patent covering the branded version, a U.S. District Court ruled.

Watson said Friday that the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware decided that Watson’s generic version of Cephalon’s Fentora (fentanyl) buccal tablets infringes U.S. Patent No. 6,264,981, though the Food and Drug Administration had approved Watson’s version of the drug.

PHILADELPHIA — Watson Labs is hoping to be the first to market a generic version of a popular drug for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

British drug maker Shire announced Thursday that it had received notification that Watson filed for regulatory approval of a version of Adderall XR (dextroamphetamine and amphetamine) capsules with the Food and Drug Administration. Watson’s application contained a Paragraph IV certification, a legal assertion that the patent covering Adderall XR is invalid, unenforceable or won’t be infringed by Watson’s product.

MORRISTOWN, N.J. — Watson Pharmaceuticals is seeking regulatory approval for a generic drug for high cholesterol.

Watson, through subsidiary Watson Labs, said it applied for approval of a generic version of Daiichi Sankyo’s and Genzyme’s Welchol (colesevelam hydrochloride). The drug, a powdered oral suspension, is used to reduce “bad” LDL cholesterol in patients with primary hyperlipidemia, either alone or in combination with a statin.

PITTSBURGH — Generic drug maker Mylan has entered settlements with Pfizer concerning two drugs for treating cholesterol.

Mylan announced Tuesday that it had settled patent litigation suits with Pfizer concerning Lipitor (atorvastatin calcium) and Caduet (atorvastatin calcium and amlodipine besylate).

Under the Caduet agreement, the lawsuit will be dismissed, and Mylan can launch its generic version on Nov. 30. Terms of the Lipitor agreement remain confidential.

Bloom and Baker, who will report to Larry Merlo, president and COO of CVS Caremark, are assuming these duties on an interim basis, pending the completion of the company's search for a new president of CVS/pharmacy.

Gurgaon, India-based Ranbaxy Labs plans to launch its version of Pfizer’s cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor (atorvastatin) in the United States in November and will receive six months’ market exclusivity in which to compete directly against Pfizer’s version, under the terms of the Hatch-Waxman Act of 1984.

Watson announced Tuesday that it had filed an application with the Food and Drug Administration seeking approval for hydromorphone hydrochloride extended-release tablets in the 8-mg, 12-mg and 16-mg strengths. The drug is a generic version of Mallinckrodt’s Exalgo.

Impax said it had filed an approval application with the Food and Drug Administration for niacin and simvastatin extended-release tablets in the 1,000 mg/20 mg strength. The drug is a generic version of Abbott Labs’ Simcor.

The case concerns a patent covering Alimta (pemetrexed) that expires in July 2016 and generic drug maker Teva Pharmaceutical Industries’ challenge to it.

MORRISTOWN, N.J. Watson Pharmaceuticals has settled a patent lawsuit with Endo Pharmaceuticals concerning an Endo prescription painkiller, Watson said Thursday.

 

The generic drug maker said its subsidiary, Watson Labs, had received a royalty-free license to Endo’s patents covering the extended-release painkiller Opana ER (oxymorphone).

 

 

Watson will have the right to launch its version of the drug in September 2012. Other details of the settlement were not disclosed, Watson said.

INDIANAPOLIS The U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey has ruled against drug maker Eli Lilly in its patent infringement case against generic drug maker Actavis regarding a drug used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, Lilly said.

 

The court ruled that a method-of-use patent covering the drug, Strattera (atomoxetine), was invalid. The patent was set to expire in May 2017.
