NEW YORK — Deutsche Bank on Thursday speculated that either Cerberus or Kroger could acquire Safeway. 

The firm noted that divestitures in a Kroger acquisition would exceed those in a Cerberus buyout.  

A Bloomberg report published last week suggested Cerberus was the lead bidder for Safeway's operations.

PITTSBURGH — Mylan has launched a generic drug for preventing rejection of transplanted organs, the company said Thursday.

The generic drug maker announced the launch of mycophenolic acid delayed-release tablets in the 180-mg and 360-mg strengths. The drug is a generic version of Novartis' Myfortic. As the first company to file a completed regulatory approval application for the generic, Mylan is entitled to 180 days in which to compete exclusively against Novartis' product before the Food and Drug Administration can approve additional generic versions.

LAVAL, Quebec — Valeant Pharmaceuticals International will acquire Solta Medical for about $250 million, Valeant said Monday.

The Canadian drug maker said the $2.92-per-share acquisition represented a 40% premium over Solta's closing share price on Friday. Solta develops, manufactures and markets energy-based medical device systems for such cosmetic medical procedures as skin tightening, improving skin texture and others.

NEW YORK — Club retailers like Costco and Sam's Club may have some competition from Amazon.com, according to published reports.

USA Today reported Thursday that the Seattle-based online retailer was creating a new business called Pantry that would allow members of its Amazon Prime premium service to buy consumer packaged goods in large quantities in a box of a pre-set size. Members will be able to put in as many items as the box can fit, up to a certain weight limit, and Amazon will ship the box for a small fee, as long as everything fits and isn't too heavy.

The entry features a book-style outer carton with a window and intricately designed insert displaying product contents while holding them securely in place, as well as specialty coating and foil stamping.

DUBLIN — Drug maker Actavis hopes to become the first to market with a generic version of a topical testosterone replacement drug marketed by Eli Lilly, Actavis said.

The generic drug maker it filed with the Food and Drug Administration for approval of testosterone topical solution in the 30-mg-per-1.5 mL strength, a generic version of Lilly's Axiron. The drug is used as a replacement therapy for deficient or absent testosterone.

The Seattle-based soda manufacturer said the 8-oz., limited-edition Halloween cans would be available in early September in four flavors — candy corn, red licorice, caramel apple and blood orange — representing traditional Halloween treats. Packaging will feature such characters as werewolves, zombies, vampires and Frankenstein.
